....I have been on this forum a few years ago and was given great advice to get a 1998 C5 through it's SVA test. I did it and the car (belonging to my uncle) has sat in a garage ever since.
I came back here some months ago explaining that said uncle was moving to Spain and had probably lost all docs and keys for the car but that I fancied buying it myself.
Crunch time now. He needs to get the car away within two weeks or will lose it to the new owners of his property. I have emailed him today to suggest my interest in buying it.
I came back here tonight to find my last posts and the help/info you guys gave me but the system here seems to only retrieve more recent stuff.
Can I again ask opinions on feasability in taking this car on (possibly locked) with no keys/docs. I know it won't be a walk in the park, but with perciverance(and maybe help from you guys) should I/could I do it??? If I buy it I will get it towed to my parents house by hook or by crook!!!
Car is 1998 C5 Targa Pewter. Incidentally before keys were lost we never used the seperate remote for locking. I think before the car left the states a new fob was ordered but I assume it was not programmed. The key looked pretty plain to me, but I guess it could have still had a chip in it.
Many Thanks
Scott

Thanks for your reply. I emailed you.
From what I remember when last on the forum the SVA test I got the car through is actually no longer required as the car is now over 10 years old, is that right? I emailed customs in the UK as duty was paid to them some time ago but I don't think that has a lot of bearing on anything now either, right?
All the legislation is a bit of a jumble of thoughts at the moment but as I said if anyone can help a bit...
Thanks

You say the car's got no documents but presumably it was UK registered after its SVA test; so get yourself the V5 as a starting point.
The physical keys come in 15 different varieties. Your key has to be the right one of the 15 or the car won't start, irrepective of whether the key is correctly "cut".
The electronic key fobs differ between Euro and Federal spec' cars and they're not interchangeable. Since you needed an SVA you've probably got a Federal car. It sounds as though you'll need to order the right fobs in due course and I'd expect them to cost something like £100 each. Once you have the right fobs they need to be matched to the car before they'll work.
If it was me, I'd start by getting the VIN number and talking to Bauer Millett in Manchester (or someone else who REALLY knows what they're doing).

Hi,
I'm afraid it wasn't UK registered. I offered to do the SVA work for him but left him to do the rest. He didn't. He just drove it around for a while(insured on the VIN-clever eh)and then it's sat in his garage ever since.
I can't really do anything in the meantime regarding getting the VIN/pursuing keys until I hear if buying the car may be happening as I can't get access to it, but at least If I have it it's a starting point. I'm hoping the SVA may still be in the car, that may be helpful too.
I don't know if the new(only)key fob we had was the right one or not. It was meant to be but certainly didn't work!
Anyone know if applying for a V5 will require much supporting documentation?

Cool thanks!
Heard today we do have keys for the car and I await hearing if he wants to sell it to me. He is having a think about it.
The car has done I think about 50-60 thousand miles and was good but not totally mint. What should I pay for it???
Cheers
As little as possible & as much a you want to!!Heard today we do have keys for the car and I await hearing if he wants to sell it to me. He is having a think about it.

To be honest its quite impossible to put a value on a car with no pics, history & vry little spec info.
What sort of price do 'YOU' think its worth?
I hoped that with no keys and all the extra hassle forseen as little as £5-6k but that would be wishful thinking! I'll see over the weekend/beginning next week if there is a chance of buying it. Now that I know he's got the keys i'll probably get a call wanting help starting it up anyway, so I can see how much I fancy it then.
Most I know is that it's a '98, Pewter (light gold) with light cream leather. I think it did have coming onto 60,000 miles from memory. It definately wasn't really low mileage. Seats were a wee but worn looking but not any rips/tears and rest of interior was fair to good. Exterior was scratch free but some chippy door edges. I remember finding a strange bit of a crack in the fibreglass on a sill but more underneath and outwith vision completely. It ran well!!! and sounded better!!!!
