Speed camera on the other side of the road to me went off, so it flashed the front of my car! Can you still get done?

No - if it was a Gatso (they are known to do this sometimes)

Nope!! The camera's on the A556 link between M56 & M6 used to go off as i drove towards them, but it doesn't count. You have to be going over the white bars on the same side of the road with the camera behind you....

That didn't happen to me approaching the scamera on the A339 just outside Basingstoke, heading towards the town. It flashed me 4 years ago, face on with two quick flashes. The white marker lines IIRC were on the other side of the Scamera, although I'll check later. I still got 3 points and a fine for doing 69 in a 60..... the only time I've been in the sh*t for doing 69.

TruVelo cameras are forward facing and are triggered by the approaching vehicle as it passes over two piezo strips set ino the road surface.

If the approaching vehicle is above the preset limit, a photo of the front of the car is taken - these cameras are very common

Gatsos are rearward facing and use doppler radar to determine the speed of the car as it passes the camera - if the speed exceeds the preset limit , the flash is triggered and a photo of the rear of the car is taken.

There are of course many new and evolving designs - Watchman[forward facing gatso]Specs, there were even tales of trials of cameras set into cat's eyes - lawdy!

Anything to get more cash out of us - bewareeek

Well! - you could shell out a few bob, and buy one of the natty little speed cam detectors - Road Angel or my favourite, Origin Pogo - these announce and define the nature of the threat.

The difference between TruVelo and Gatso - you always approach the rear of the Gatso, it usually has red and white stripes on its back
After you have passed the Gatso, you will see the optics pointing at the rear of your car.
If you have triggered it, then you will see a flash in your mirror.

You will also see markings on the road surface used I suppose, as some form of calibration.

TruVelo is I recall, blue with a yellow face, and 2 snout like optics protruding from it - there will also be two strips in you path on the road, set at some distance from the camera.

If you trigger it, you don't see the flash as it is infra redrolleyes

Having been convicted by a truvelo [forward facing] in the dark in Lincolnshire, i can state that they do flash in poor light!
Vet Guru, i am positive you are ok, because of my earlier post. The Gatso bounces off stationary objects, & sometimes goes off as you approach in the unmonitored lane.
Having said that, i hope it wasn't a Truvelo, cos they are nasty!!!

Gatso cameras can be used either rear facing or front facing and are used both ways in some European counties. BUT so far as I am aware the Gatso system is only approved for rear facing use in UK.

The Gatso can be set for different trigger speeds "towards" and "away" so in UK it's the "away" speed which is carefully set. However, the "towards" function is still active so the installer typically sets it to a fairly high but not ridiculously high speed. This gives approaching speeders a useful fright (in the eyes of Bib) while avoiding too much wasted film on approaching speeders who can't be prosecuted due the lack of system approval.

Phew!

Yes, A Gatso will sometimes flash below the posted speed limit when you approach it. This is apparently due to confusion of the camera when radar reflections bounce around off other objects. I think this is also the reason why Gatsos are always used with white markings on the road in UK, so that cars photographed from behind can be checked to ensure the speed reading is genuine and not a reflection error.

[A Truvelo camera is usually a front-facing camera (it can also be rear facing) taking pictures using a flash gun fitted with a magenta filter so the driver is less likely to be dazzled by the flash.]

Some of the rear facing Gatso's have an additional forward facing camera just past the 'rearward facing' unit - gets frontal image of car/bike + driver.
