On the 29th April 2009 the SVA test as we know it will disappear to be replaced by the 'IVA' test.
It seems that the test will change and all of the paperwork, brochures, posters etc will have to be reprinted on a directive from the EU. Fees will also undoubtedly increase again from the £190 they have not long been increased to.
The requirements of the test itself will change, and items that have previously been acceptable on the SVA will no longer pass the IVA.
To view a draft of the regulations, go to http://www.transportoffice.gov.uk/IVA-manuals

I spoke to a 'friendly' tester today, and it seems they are already starting to implement a few of the changes. On the car I had in there were a few "That won't pass the IVA"s being bandied about.

Be forewarned!

Haven't read the document yet but my bet is it will be more complicated and expensive knowing HM Gov

I accompanied a westfield to SVA test a couple of weeks back. Tester said that the key changes seemed to be minor (must have a reverse etc)but the cost is rumoured to be around £500. Seems will impact bikes more.

Apparently numbers of cars being presented for SVA have dropped massively and most of the test centres are struggling to justify their existence.

Worrying for the future of our home built car industry and also importing cars and bikes.

Quite a number of stations I know of have shut. I can imagine that the new increased fee is part of creating sustainability with the network of stations. Guess we'll have to see!

There will a small change in normal SVA charges with reference too American Cars etc., Lightley to be £210 or so, Kit cars and low volume made cars will be rising too £540 and a more stringent test including manufacturers documented evidence of fuel tank testing but this I think is only fair because the test often takes much longer.

Sounds sensible. I've always thought it bonkers that a properly engineered American or Japanese production car gets the same test as a kit car built from sellotape and string in someone's garden shed.

So what you're saying is for American cars, the SVA is changing its name to IVA and going up by £20 to £210? Hardly the end of the world then. Although the exchange rate might well be...

Lovely Ruf you had there yesterday. At least some car enthusiasts still have some money!

Thanks for sorting the new battery on my Z06. Works great now, but still using the Optimate battery tender to make sure.

It was never the same test given exemptions for US cars.

I heard today that the IVA will have stricter noise requirements too.

WTF stricter than 101dB?

Hi Nige. I was at an SVA centre yesterday with a friend's kit car. It failed on emissions. Another guy was there and he failed on sound and was told by the tester that it will be 98db under the new rules.I don't know whether this is based on heresay or what they have already been told.

I also asked about US cars and he mentioned that the test would be around £250 for these.

Thanks David, my C6 Z06 produced 95dB with the factory spec exhaust on the noise drive by test so I guess we should still be okay.

Along with the name change comes changes in the requirements and test. Some of the things that pass the SVA will not pass the IVA.
If (as has been rumoured) the lights will have to be 'E' marked, the speedometer accuracy checked, the tyres also 'E' marked, and the db limit lowered then the '...going up by £20...' is going to cost £1,000+.
Still not the end of the world I guess, but with new cars costing more thanks to the exchange rate and another grand on top, the base level Mustang in the UK is going to go up from £24k earlier this year to over £30k next year.
