With all the new CAFE rules in the states coming in, Would you buy a C6/7 with a V6 engine if it still had the big horsepower? All do we like the V8 part of a vette? A twin turbo V6 maybe?
And do you think GM are going to take some horses away from the Vette to improve the gas miles?

They tried this with the Mustang but it didnt really work!

Will Ferrari and Lambo follow suit too with a V6? They both have a huge stake in the USA market place too.
I'm sure they are working on technology to overcome the emissions with the trusty V8, maybe even shutting down 4 of the cylinders while cruising (as with the Hemi).

I myself would certainly look at an electric option in the way future!! Yes shock horror. But electric cars perform dam fast, I've driven one and have never experienced anything like it. Instant power at tap with no lag.

If they switched the vette to a mid engine V6, I might go for it.

The appeal of Corvettes (for me) is a combination of looks/presence, V8 music, power delivery and performance. Not in that order smile Give it a turbo V6 and you lose at least 2 of those; make it smaller (i.e. Solstice size based on the rumours) and you take away another. Clever engineering could make a V8 economical enough in real world driving, but sadly a V6 turbo would probably do far better in the "official" figures, which is all that seems to matter these days (i.e. being seen to do the right thing rather than actually doing the right thing).

I think it's less of an issue for other manufacturers - Ferrari V8s with their flat-plane cranks sound awful anyway (just noise, not music), so a V6 couldn't sound any worse.

on the one hand car designers / manufacturers are being hamstrung by safety legislation which adds weight, while at the same time they are trying to reduce weight to give better gas miles!
I can't see the C7 being a more powerful car than a C6 frown

V6 or V8 doesn't make much difference. Would you buy a 2.0 V8 that revved to 18,000rpm though?!

I would if it was still a V8, although if that was the case I'd keep the current one. I would rather there was a C7 than not.

I quite like V8's if you haven't guessed already, but with the draconian laws on sound emissions you can have a hard time discerning what engine configuration a car has.
You have more chance of hearing a crisp eggy fart at a hundred metres than a modern V8 at the same distance.
And the smell is very similar too..........

Really? Whenever I've been to the US there seem to be WAY more V6's than GTs (the V8)?

I wouldn't buy a Vette V6 - isn't that what the Camaro is for? I think fuel consumption is less about number of cylinders than other factors like state of tune and gearing. I'd happily give up some top end power to keep the torque and flexibility of a big V8.

You may see them introduce technology to cut out four cylinders on light highway loads. My Suburban has this and its not noticeable aurally but a message does appear. Consumption still sucks though.

Most of the upcoming rules I think are about average consumption across the range. So the obvious thing to do is for GM to make more economical cars like the Volt and fewer trucks. I do not think Vettes are the problem yet.

No.

A Corvette is neither a V6, nor mid engined.

Go ahead and make something else in those formats, just don't call it a Corvette.

I personally think that the Corvette will survive in smaller numbers so that the manufacturers overall average is unaffected.
There are other ways around it like Displacement on Demand, electric motors in addition to the V8, and lighter weight that can be employed to help the cause before you get rid of the Corvettes heart - a V8.

Yep when I think American sports and muscle cars, I think V8. Nothing against V6 engined cars. I've had a few in my time under the bonnet of a cortina or Granada, but wether it's a straight six or a V6 it just isn't the full ticket for me when it's in an American Muscle car. It's the sound I tell you, it's all part of it. cloud9

surely a turbo v6 won't be much if any more frugal or emit any less co2's ....

If it was more frugal maybe we should follow it to its natural conclusion and drive very fuel efficent single pot thumpers.
Good for mixing cement as well I hear.........

I'm not sure if I agree there's more V8's than V6's, I just done a quick search on US Ebay, 75% of the cars where V8's.
Look at the value of those V6's compared to the V8's, they depreciate radically.

No No No, Having owned a Vette for 13 years i love V8, i do run an 06 Mustang as my every day driver, and yes its a V6, its quick enough, looks awesome but sounds s41t in my opinion, fuel economy is 18MPG so not much better than a V8 if not worse, and all i do is appologise and make excusses for it being a V6, so i have just bought the missis a V8 jeep to make up for it!! sound lovelly, cant wait till i can afford to change the Mustang for a V8 version, as i love the car. SO no no no i would never buy a V6 vette, it just would not be a Vette in my opinion. Dare i say i would rather remember it as a great V8 car of the past, rather than just fade away into the norm.

In a similar logic you could suggest that V6 owners are happier and therefore less likely to sell their cars.....;) Most of the mustang rental cars are V6s so that will skew the figures quite a bit too.
