A 90-year-old woman driving her new Dodge Challenger died Sunday after her car slammed into a pole and burst into flames, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

BSO released information about the crash on Monday. Here is how police described what happened:

About 10 a.m., Maria Brunetti of Pompano Beach was driving her 2009 Dodge Challenger south on South Andrews Avenue, approaching McNab Road.

Homicide detectives believe that Brunetti accelerated the car instead of braking when she tried turning east onto McNab and lost control.

The Dodge Challenger slammed into a concrete pole and caught fire, with Brunetti and her 47-year-old son, Peter Brunetti, trapped inside. Both wore their seat belts.

Bystanders pulled the pair from the burning vehicle before fire-rescue arrived, which took both to North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach.

Maria Brunetti was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. Peter Brunetti was in serious condition.

The Challenger was destroyed. The number of miles on the odometer was 151.

I am not sure whether to be afraid that any car can burst into flames in this day and age or that 90 year old ladies are buying muscle cars...

Makes a compelling argument for a compulsory re-test!
