Exhaust is now fitted and sounding and looking good. Dana 4.10 Diff pumpkin arrived today so will look forward to fitting these, these are the alleged benefits according to a ZR-1 workshop. It's gonna be fun fitting them and trying them out driving

  • 18% more torque to the wheels at all speeds
  • Sixth gear becomes a useful gear. The car can be moved around in traffic at 65 MPH without downshifting.
  • Has a broadening effect on the useful power band for the LT5. The throttle response is as good at 3000 rpm as it is at 4000 rpm with a 3.45 gear ratio.
  • Incredible throttle response in first and second gears
  • The car completes the quarter mile in fourth gear at about peak power, 6300 rpm

I'll be taking the car for a longish run over the weekend with the new 3" exhaust fitted, Chris, So I shall try to keep stock of how the car feels, sounds, revs etc. Then I'll probably fit the gears next week and try to work out the comparison.

Excellent run yesterday; With the new exhaust fitted there is a drumming that sits in your ear drums at times, but this is far out weighed with the glorious noise and seemingly added power. Yesterday was the first time I really really openend the old girl up and whilst travelling at a reasonable speed on a dual carriageway the power when I floored it was imense( correction, it was feckin imense ), also from a rolling start out of a junction, heading straight, the power on the standard ratio gears put the car sideways and nearly caught me unaware till I straightened her out and she catapulted away. Something I must remember after I've fitted the 4.10's. I need to get her to a rolling road and wouldn't be surprised if she's making more than the 546hp, pre - rebuild, perhaps closer to the 600's now I've added the big valve heads. I also need to look at injectors, the ones fitted are for stock 350ci and well used. Although throttle response is sharp.

With 4.10 gears behind that motor, it's no wonder you have your hands full with acceleration now!
Surely 10s without batting an eyelid?!

This car ought to be featured in ACW sometime soon, especially given that you've put in so much work yourself.
What do you think?

Cliff, you wont regret the 4:10, I fitted one to mine and your right the Tremec 6 speed is much more useable and of course the benefits to acceleration are, how should I put it, ...interesting! And I am a bit short of your HP! Have fun!

I've not fitted the 4.10's just yet, probably do them in the next month.
I think the good thing is the car is now nearly all up together with all the main stuff, All I need to do now is iron out the small bits like fitting new uprated injectors along with some new sticky tyres. Then it's a full tank of petrol and head off to a strip on a 'Run what you brung' to get the driver trained up to see if he can match his cars potential. I'll probably get her on a rolling road in between and would be happy to do a feature once I've got some figures.

Will do Graeme. The Z's run ZF6 speed boxes, I'm not sure how they rate, durability wise, compared to the tremec butI admit drivetrain failure is one of my fears, being on limited funds.
What lubes did you use with your rear gears ? thanks.

In the diff its stock GM stuff and I cant remember whats in the box, but its a good call I should be changing it soon. The benefit of the 4:10 is less stress on the drivetrain, you take it out on tyresbiggrin still thats what they are there for!

I followed some tips from the U.S. and put fully synthetic GM engine oil in the gearbox last year, If anything the box sounds a tad noisier I think, so I might try the factory oil again. As for the 4.10's - I didn't realise it meant less stress on the drivetrain. That's something I've learnt today.
