General Motors Corp shares fell 15 percent Wednesday morning to $9.98 after Merrill Lynch said the automaker will need to raise about $15 billion in cash to shore up liquidity and bankruptcy is "not impossible" if the auto market continues to slump.

Very old news,

GM was on the brink of filing for Chapter 11 (IIRC) about 2 years ago.

Any Ford are not much better off.
I saw an industry report that, given FMC's losses, every vehicle they sold actually cost them £600.

Old news they are all in trouble -

Ford recently renewed talks with Renault about the possibility of the French carmaker purchasing Volvo, according to Reuters.

Renault had plans for a merger just before Ford bought Volvo eight years ago but the most recent talks reportedly ended quickly due to price differences.

Sources also told Reuters that the US manufacturer has had talks with China’s third-largest carmaker Dongfeng Motor Group about becoming a potential partner for Volvo.

Ford has refused to comment on the speculation and reiterated earlier this year that Volvo was not for sale.

The US carmaker may have changed its strategy after Volvo reported a net loss of $151m in the first quarter of the year compared with a profit of $94m a year earlier.

Ford has reported a loss of over $15bn (£7.53bn) in the past two years and abandoned its long-standing goal of returning to profitability in 2009.

The carmaker has already sold Land Rover, Jaguar and Aston Martin, disbanding the Premier Automotive Group and leaving Volvo the only remaining brand in the group.

It's Not just GM!!!

Mercedes managed to sell Chrysler to a venture capital company (after dumping all their bad news on it)

News reports suggest that the only way the VC company will make money is by breaking Chrysler up and selling Jeep etc separately

Testing times for all it seems, but a 54 year low on stocks at GM makes it a buyers market.
As a used guide, the car I bought six months ago, can now be picked up for $10,000 less banghead

.... but mine is still priceless to me. cloud9

In April the best selling vehicle in the US was the Ford f150 pick up as it had been for many a year. In May the list was as follows

1/ Honda Civic
2/ Toyota Camry
3/ Toyota Corolla
4/ Honda Accord
5/ Ford F150

First month since 1992 that a car has outsold a truck in the US. And even worse, it's four Japanese cars that have leapt to the top of the tree.

General Motors remains America's top carmaker

US brand outperforms Toyota to remain the bestseller
General Motors has maintained its position as the bestselling carmaker in the US despite recording an 18 per cent fall in sales last month.

The continuation of the American giant’s decade-long dominance was due to archrival Toyota’s sales faring even worse – its volumes fell by more than a fifth in June.

GM sold 69,000 more cars and light trucks than Toyota in the US – a significant widening of the gap between the rivals, which in May was fewer than 10,000 units.

The US carmaker credited its relatively modest drop in part to a generous interest-free financing promotion put in place last month.

Fellow American marques Ford and Chrysler were also outperformed by GM in June - Blue Oval sales fell by 28 per cent and Chryler’s by 36 per cent.

Nissan’s US sales were also down, dropping by 17.7 per cent.

Honda was the only brand to buck the trend last month, with a 1.1 per cent rise over June 2007.

The problem for GM and Ford is a lot of what they make drinks fuel which is now the wrong side of $4 a gallon and heading towards $5 (diesel and premium are pretty much already there).
Consumers are already more interested in gas mileage compared with the number of cupholders and seat configurations which seemed to be the obsession of a couple of years ago.
Small efficient (mainly import) cars are going replace American's SUVs as they won't be able to afford to run them.
