NEWS RELEASE

Partnership Responds To Public Concerns On Speeding

Mobile safety camera enforcement vans will be targeting new sites across Surrey from this week in response to public demand.

The Surrey Safety Camera Partnership has drawn up a list of 14 new sites for exceptional enforcement - sites where public concern about speeding has been voiced but which do not fully meet the agreed criteria for regular core enforcement.

The list was agreed after consultation with Surrey Police's Casualty Reduction Officers, specialist officers with a responsibility for road safety education and enforcement.

The new sites will conform to the Partnership's standard policy of visible enforcement and the sites will be well-signed and vehicles positioned to be highly visible (see attached photo)

The exceptional enforcement sites are:

  • * * * *A22 Caterham Bypass, Caterham.
  • * * * *A24 Deepdene Avenue / London Road, Dorking.
  • * * * *A24 Horsham Road, Holmwood.
  • * * * *A25 West Hill / East Hill, Oxted.
  • * * * *A30 Egham Bypass, Egham.
  • * * * *A240 Reigate Road, Ewell.
  • * * * *A246 Epsom Road, West Clandon / East Clandon.
  • * * * *A308 Staines Road East, Sunbury.
  • * * * *A308 Staines Road West, Sunbury Common.
  • * * * *A325 Portsmouth Road, Frimley / Camberley (B3411 Frimley Road - A30 London Road).
  • * * * *B290 Epsom Lane North, Tattenham Corner.
  • * * * *B382 Old Woking Road, Maybury.
  • * * * *B2036 Balcombe Road, Horley.
  • * * * *B3007 Weybourne Road, Weybourne.
A review of the sites will be undertaken regularly and if necessary they could be changed after consultations with local police and county council engineers.

Partnership Project Manager Duncan Knox said:

"Outside of our core fixed safety camera sites and mobile zones, we often get requests from residents or community representatives to provide speed enforcement at various sites. They do not always meet the necessary qualifying criteria for fixed or mobile enforcement - which targets the worst collision hotspots in the county - so we hope these new exceptional sites will allay some of their fears and send out a warning to speeding motorists that they cannot ignore the concerns of local people."

The Surrey Safety Camera Partnership is made up of four public sector organisations, Surrey County Council, Surrey Police, the Highways Agency and Her Majesty's Court Service (HMCS), who are working together to help cut casualties on Surrey's roads.

Thanks for the heads up Eric!

Not that I'm paranoid, but a few of those roads are ones I use regularly; do they say what type of car has been prompting these public-spirited folk to complain about speeding?

I've read that they STILL haven't passed the law banning radar detectors. I might get my bro to bring over a Valentine 1...

So possibly one person in Surrey with nothing better to do complains about speeding cars driving past his/her house and the morons from Surrey Council decide to ignore the Government and Police guidelines relating to the placement of speed cameras i.e. they can only place them in accident hot spots.

If anyone gets a NIP in relation to any of these new sites then I would suggest taking the feckers to the highest court in the land.......could be a lot of work for 5USA smile

I have just sent the following email to Mr Dougan (his email address is above should any of the locals feel like doing similar)

Dear Mr. Dougan,

I read with disgust your news release regarding the placement of extra speed camera sites across Surrey, obviously the massive council tax increases have not satisfied your ability to waste my money and you need the good people of Surrey to top up your coffers with fines generated illegally.

Illegally? Well yes Mr. Dougan by your own admission you are placing Mobile Speed Camera Vans at "sites where public concern about speeding has been voiced but which do not fully meet the agreed criteria for regular core enforcement."

You also mention in your release "Mobile safety camera enforcement vans will be targeting new sites across Surrey from this week in response to public demand." if this is the case perhaps you would be good enough to provide me with a list of all the members of the "public" who have demanded the placement of these Mobile Speed Cameras. Under the Freedom of Information Act you will be required to provide this information to backup your claims should any of my clients take you to Court.

Given by your own admission these new sites do not meet Government or Police guidelines regarding the placement of Mobile Speed Cameras, I will be recommending to anyone caught in these illegal speed traps to challenge the process through the Courts.

Yours sincerely,

Public concern? I imagine that every motorway shows how concerned the majority are about speeding. Its about time the authorities remembered we live in a democracy.

I admire your brio VHR, but I fear the get out clause is clear for all to read: "14 new sites for exceptional enforcement - sites where public concern about speeding has been voiced but which do not fully meet the agreed criteria for regular core enforcement"

i.e. the sites do not justify permanent GATSOs but they will be putting mobile vans around those routes.

The Govt have completely relaxed the rules about camera placement recently and rescinded the need for them to be yellow and in the open.

See The Sun's recent photos of the little Nazis hiding in horseboxes in Brunstrom-grad!

clap Well done Nige

The yogurt eating, tree hugging, do-gooders wont be happy until they've slapped every stringent measure on the motorist going, hidden cigerettes and alcohol from the world and taken away all our choices. Things have changed so much in the decades I've been on this earth and at this rate It wont be long before they have us knitting wearing hard hats and flourescent jackets. How about these do-gooders get stuck into real problems such as knife carrying youngsters and inner town/city crimes.

Yes chaps, stay legal, keep your eyes peeled and all counter measures up to date. The Lingenfelter Black Beast has just been zapped on the A30 Egham Bypass, Egham. Obviously the horse box is working well.
