I've always rather liked Corvettes but have never owned one (I've driven a couple).
I've got an E60 M5 that I'm thinking of p/exing and notice that Stratstone have a ZO6 for £42k.

I've read the reviews naturally, but what are the real owner's views?

How is its real world performance in comparison to an M5?
Should I bother with a ZO6, or just look at the C6?
What are they like as a day to day car to do approx 20,000 miles a year in?

You may laugh , but I quite like the idea of an SLK 55AMG as an alternative - views?

If I were you I would give Mitch a call at Bauer Millett before you do anything. And yes 100% go for the ZO6. You cannot possibly have more fun with your clothes on. Ask Eric or David....

Be adventurous - go for Z06, although reading in between the lines they may not be as strong mechanically as one would expect if driven hard (and why wouldn't you?) Buy a C6 and expect it to cost as much as your shopping car to service and be just as reliable. SLK AMG55 and M5 - well I guess they are both very competent and classy vehicles (along with some other similar cars) but (without being too rude to anyone that has one) they are like *ssholes - namely everyone has got one! not exactly exclusive are they?

I have had mine for 7 months now and it never fails to put a smile on my face.

To be honest, coming out of an M5 you're much more likely to go for the Merc - unless you're having a full-on mid-life crisis! (Like the rest of us, I have to say.....)

My feeling is the Corvette amounts to a reasonably civilised sports car whereas the Bimmer or Merc are hairy versions of a regular road car.

Depends on your driving really, but I'm sure there's plenty of Corvettes covering that kind of annual mileage.

An SLK or a Z06 ... is this a serious question?

The only place I've ever seen an M5 or SLK is as a small spec of dust in my rear view mirror.

If comfort and a bit of poke is all you want then a Beemer or Merc is your choice. If you don't like to get noticed and have everyone take as much notice of you as the Fiesta driving behind you then again beemer / merc is ideal.

However, If you want a heart thumping saturn 5 rocket for the road you need a Z06. You'll have to put up with an aching face though, as the smile becomes almost permanent thumbup

Vroooooooooooooooooooom !!! driving

The Z06 is in a completely different league from any other sports/performance car even vaguely in the same price range. (At least until that pesky Nissan GT-R comes along next year...)

You are buying Lambo Murcielago-busting performance for £42k! eek

I would certainly have no qualms about using one every day, but it has to be said if you are not going to actually use the full performance regularly, the new 435hp C6s seem excellent value and you can get them as a targa or a convertible and with a 6 speed paddle shift auto.

But it has to be said the Z06 looks a lot cooler even though the differences are quite subtle.

You see - I said "ask Eric or David" and whoosh - you get a reply from two guys with the coolest meanest tarmac ripping ZO6's in the UK. Bet you wouldn't have got that response on the SLK55 or M5 threads!

You can't really see any of those SLK55 or M5 owners going on a forum can you?

Thanks chaps
I've had Lotuses and TVRs before and one of the things I really enjoyed was the loyalty and good humour of the owners.
It looks like the same can be said for Corvettes - that's a definite plus.

I'm going to go and see Stratsone on Tuesday and see what deal they'll do on the M5.

David's Z06 office.

David Birch's beast: standard C6 apart from a few little bits. That car goes, not much to touch it.
It's awfully comfy, spacy and a steal even compared to used sportscar rivals.

Well said Dink! A prolific PHer who understands more about cars than most of the keyboard warriors put together!

Saw a couple of cracking Lotus Europas at Goodwood today. Methinks you like.....

I use my Z06 every day, except in snow or *very bad rain* (just not fun in standing water). I've had it nearly a year. It's reliable, easy to drive, an absolute blast when you want, practical (huge trunk), great noise, great fun, reasonably economical, a head turner, conversation starter, all round great car.

My immediately previous daily driver was an M5. Awesome vehicle of course, but just not in the same league for smiles. If you don't need to cart around people go for the Z. I simply cannot imagine that you could possibly even think about harboring the chance of a regret once you have it to play with every day.

I was just about to suggest that you pm car95 -
Hope you are well Sean.

There is at least one other Z06 owner that swapped from an M5, and I seem to recall an SLK55 owner trading in to a C6.

Another Z06 owner that tends not to post on the forums also has an SL55, but his wife prefers to travel in the Z06 on long journeys as it is more comfortable!

Thank you Martin. I use a Z06 as my 'daily' driver and have just used it to get out to Spa and back for the Britcar 4 Hour Race. I averaged 29.2 Mpg there and back, I'm on my third car and I've never broken one. Quite impressive really given that my workshops reckon I can break anything!

Yes without doubt....just done 4000 miles across USA in my new one

but would recommend c5 Z06 too as I enjoyed my one so much I had to keep it - now shipped to the UK so i can use it while I am there. In many ways I prefer its rawer delivery and the lack of gadgets and would choose it as a daily driver - I've run it for five years with no problem at all, just change the oil once a year...

It goes quite well too...

Well I have to say this is proving harder than I thought.
Stratstone don't seem very keen to sell the ZO6.

They won't even get back to me about it...
