Hello wavey

I have a nicely built 350 SBC that's reputedly capable of 500bhp. I say reputedly as I haven't used the thing yet!

This engine came with an Edelbrock 'Air Gap' Performer manifold, a new Holley 650 double pumper and new K&N X-Steam filter.

I've never been a carb fan, so am considering injection. I was wondering if the Tuned Port Injection systems are any good... or are they a step backwards in terms of power?

Answers / suggestions on an e-postcard please!

The real kiddie for drag related custom fuel injection systems has to be John Sleath Racing. (do a search on Google)He will actually use your existing manifold (if suitable) and convert is to EFI. He uses F.A.S.T electronics. It don't come cheap though with mapping time etc.

The TPI set ups, at least the L98 (i.e. not second generation LT1) flow pretty badly, they are a good match for a stock engine (long runners, gives them good torque and ideal for an auto) - but these systems peaked on engines doing about 250 Hp, the only way to really wake one up is either to force feed it (i.e. turbo or supercharging), go for one of the custom set ups or probably the best way, potentially at the cost of low down pull, is to go for the LT1 style set up. TPI specialities do a conversion kit, basically they could sell you the parts you need. I think the name is 'TPI Mini Ram.' Alternatively, there are a couple of guys who have converted LT1 manifolds to fit the L98, try Adi4 (He, I think does the conversion) and DanT on corvetteclub.org - this is probably a cheaper route.

500 hp on a small block sounds a lot on a 350 - is it still stock capacity?

Not necessarilly but certainly will not get near there with a 650cfm carb. That sort of HP would require breathing through something like 800cfm.
In addition to your Airgap it will need some good heads and a serious roller cam to get towards those sort of numbers not to mention lightening and balancing, roller rockers etc. IMO of course.
