General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz promised the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V would blow away its competitors, and it looks like he wasn't just blowing smoke. Cadillac says that with John Heinricy, the director of vehicle integration (and a darn fine racing driver) behind the wheel, a production-mimicking CTS-V posted a lap time of 7:59.32 around Germany's famous Nordschleife.

The car's sub-8-minute lap is believed to be the fastest-ever documented posted by a production sedan running factory-spec street tires. Other than a harness bar and a 6-point racing harness, along with a fire suppression unit, Cadillac says the CTS-V didn't have any performance modifications beyond what is planned for production.

The CTS-V's engine is a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 with about 550 bhp (the car is still undergoing final testing). Cadillac says one of their most important objectives "is to make the CTS-V the world's fastest production sedan, as a part of the overall goal to make the V-Series Cadillac's ultimate expression of performance and technology."
