Chaps, I'm looking into getting a 2006 Z06, with the intention of keeping it for around 2 years. Prices for the early cars are currently around 45k and I would just like to know what the concensus is on residual values, in a year or two's time. In particular, how much do you think residuals will drop when the warranty period expires? Thanks in advance!

Also, should I be looking for a UK/Euro spec car or is it worth venturing Stateside and going down the import route?

I would buy euro as you will still have a factory warranty left on it for a year or more. I would think they will be around the 40k in a years time not sure what they will be with higher than average miles. I think the US spec ones stay away from unless really cheap beacuse you will find a euro car for sale.

I'd buy a US spec one as at the moment you could buy a 2007 C6 Z06 with less than 10,000 miles for less than $60,000 which at the current exchange rate is just over £30,000 plus your import, duty and VAT it is still going to be less than buying a 2006 Euro spec. Yes I know you get a warranty but has anyone had any warranty work done?

With the current exchange rate I'd definitely try to find a US one. Even the new ones are heavily discounted at the moment (I got 10% off) and are within striking distance of 2006 UK money.

No, I will put the Cerb into storage for a few years. The Cerb is a keeper, I love it to bits and have invested far too much hard work to let it go. BUT, I have the Z06 itch big time, its just one of those cars I absolutely have to experience.

Another thought is that my next posting will be to Germany for 2 years, and as such I will gain tax free status. I'm assuming this means I can import a Z06 to Germany and avoid import duty. Are prices at dealers comparable between Germany and the UK?

If you do go to Germany and get a cheaper newer import (ie US as said above) then when you come back to the UK after two years you can bring the car in tax and VAT free.

Just something to think about if you are thinking residual values as you will obviously get more for a 2007 car!

Longbow, I am also spending the odd moment trying to do exactly the same thing, find a used 1 or 2 year old ZO6. I've found several mint low miles Z's in the U.S. for around $62k. By the time all the import/work etc is added to the cost, it will end up costing me around £42/£44k. Dave did mention to me that you should look at the figure in the U.S. and add approx 30% as a rough guide to give you a final UK price.

There are some yellow ZO6's on PH now, both been around for quite a while for £44k, maybe yellow isn't your preferrence.

At the moment therefore I am on the UK/EU hunt as at least I will get a warranty and won't have to mess about with the import route. However, if I find nothing suitable here then USA here I come..

Quite a few of us actually.

My entire gearbox was replaced under warranty when it lost 5th and reverse last year.
Every '06 Euro Z06 will have had its roof skin refitted under warranty too.
Some have had rear diffs sorted etc.

However if you intend to tune the car (especially if you are going to have it remapped to get the most out of it) then the warranty is pretty much voided under the latest GM rules, in which case you may as well get a US car.

But if you are intending to keep it standard, then Euro cars are worth the small premium IMO.

I have been on the phone with a company who specializes in supplying tax free cars to those in the Forces today and have a quote. A brand new Z06 ordered through 51st State on the road for £48k. The lead time is approx 4 months from order and a 5k deposit is required. I need to confirm the situation with the warranty. I'd like one in white ideally - it that reserved for the Ron Fellows edition?

So that's a Euro car? If it's from the US and it is tax-free, it is way overpriced, as VHR and others have indicated.

White is only available on the Ron Fellows so far. Surprising they haven't announced it as an '09 colour, but they have released the ZR1 colour, Cyber Grey, which amongst other reasons is why I'm tempted to trade my '06 in for an '09.

BTW, having done a lot of reading about the various model years, I would go for an '08 or newer as you get better steering, shocks and gearbox compared to previous years.

Certainly '07s offered no benefits over '06s and there have been numerous reports of rocker arm problems on '07s only.

The Warranty situation is that we do include a 1 year warranty for all forces cars but this is extendable to 4 years should you wish.
The delivery time will be significantly less than 4 months, Martin just mentions that to cover himself in the event of any unforeseen delays. It has never taken more than 10 weeks to get a car over and normally its 6 weeks from order to registration. If you would like references from customers who have used us before please do let me know as I know you will get encouraged to go "official" by one or two other dealers.
Feel free to give me a call directly to discuss in more detail but obviously the car will need to come through the Tax free company.
Regards Charles

Thanks to everyone for the info and advice. As soon as my plans go firm I'll press ahead, I think a new car is the way to go with a comprehensive warranty.
