This month's Road & Track makes a comparison between Z06 and ZR1. They summarise,

"Purists and track-day enthusiasts undoubtedly will prefer the light weight and naturally aspirated power of the Z06, while those wanting to smoke a Viper at the local drags will opt for the supercharged 620 bhp ZR1, which benefits from Chevrolet's sophisticated magnetic ride suspension."

You wait, the next model announced will be a paddle-shift Z06 with magnetic ride! Maybe a convertible too!

I read that in the States. Worst article ever.

They couldn't actually get hold of a 430 Scuderia (to compare with the standard F430) or less surprisingly, a ZR1 to compare to the Z06, so they just made up a story! rolleyes

I very much doubt you'll see the ZR-1 with paddles even though there is speculation as the CTS-V will be available with one. The numbers they are going to build they will sell regardless. A Z06 with paddle shift would be the real trick car, particularly when you're caught flat out round a bend, desperate to pull a gear.... If I remember correctly, magnetic ride is to be standard on ZR-1s.....

Yep agree it was a complete non-story.

You gotta love the way C5 hardtop, originally slated as a cut-price C5 to fill gap left when the Camaro/Firebird twins were laid to rest, has morphed into the expensive end of Corvette's line-up.

Here's a scan of the whole article, with acknowledgement to R&T of course www.roadandtrack.com

Do you mean the use of the FRC as the basis for the C5 Z06?

That is a strange way of looking at it. The C6 Z06 and ZR1 are clearly based on the standard C6 coupe, not really anything to do with the C5 Z06 being based on the hardtop...confused

If you read between the lines of my OP you should hopefully find where I was coming from. I didn't feel it would be necessary to go as far as mentioning the possible 4x4 Vette to compete with Porsche's turbo Cayenne. biggrin

To my mind it would be very odd for the £100k Vette to be in any way lesser than the £65k version. To paraphrase the article, you can slap me around and call me Suzy if that happens!

Joking aside, GM are going to have to come up with a faster way of changing gears IF they want Corvette to be up amongst the ultimate all-round high performance cars. A heavy manual shift is mighty slow in the modern world.
