"Showroom Tax"
Discussion
If he does, it will be interesting to hear what the opposition have to say.
What with Borris planning on revoking the London tax if he is elected, any
significant backlash from the other parties could see a lot of people switching
parties come the next election.
There is a limit to how many 'pain' taxes they can get away with before being shot down.

It's being pitched as a "deterrent" to steer people away from cars with high CO2 emissions. If it really is a deterrent (which I don't believe for a moment) then he'll give some notice so that dealers can clear their stock and committed deals will have completed. Since it's really another way to plug the holes in Labour's "tax and spend" policy then he'll probably introduce it with immediate effect and scr*w dealers and people who've already paid deposits - after all what's the point in cancelling an order to save £2K if it means losing your deposit?

Gov't should just scrap road tax and put 7.5p a litre on fuel that would be tax neutral and much fairer.
Government should scrap road tax, insurance, and drastically reduce fuel duty/extortion...Fuel costs should have a minimal tax, insurance, and road duty, or whatever way they want to call it, all built in.
Then ramp up income tax like feck instead. That way the motorists wont be funding the running of the country, its workers will !!!! Which is how it should be..
If the cost of transport drops, then so does the cost of pretty much everything else, which will counteract the increase in income tax.
Plus my hobby wont be taxed as much, which disgusts me at present.

So, could this be a good reason to buy slightly older cars and drive them instead?
That's my excuse for driving a '78 instead of a C6 Z06 Ron Fellows limited edition rocket! Out of curiosity, is this tax only applicable to cars bought in this country seeing as it's called "showroom tax". So cars bought abroad and imported would be exempt? Or do they catch you at the DVLA during registration for the first time?
