To reduce the use of cars with the highest levels of CO2 emissions, it is proposed that those cars that emit 226g/km and above of CO2 would be subject to a higher daily charge of £25 instead of the current £8 charge.

Examples of cars that would be liable for the higher charge include some sport utility vehicles, 4X4s such as Range Rovers, some luxury cars such as certain models of the Audi A8, certain sports cars such as the Porsche 911 and Chevrolet Corvette, and high performance versions of family cars such as the Volkswagen Golf R32 and Vauxhall Vectra VXR. Drivers can check their vehicle’s emissions on their V5C (Vehicle Registration Certificate) or at vcacarfueldata.org.uk.

It is proposed that the higher daily charge would apply from 6 October 2008.

Exactly, if this doesn't motivate the lazy Londoners who didn't bother voting the last two times and let him get in twice, nothing will.

Letting him have control of transport is like letting a vegetarian run the meat business, or Hitler being in charge of synagogues; simply mind-boggling!

I think GM would be pleased with their two brand mentions! I guess VXR and VW R32 prices around the central London area will be slightly reduced...

What a nutcase though, hope this mad crusade can be stopped.

Here's a question.

With road tax heading to £400 for the newer Vettes in a couple of months my good old C5 is looking better by the day in its tax band of £180 or so. Will the same apply to Red Ken's congestion charge so I can cruise around town at £8 a day while newer Vettes are hit for £25?

NO. Dream on.

It's £25 for Band G or pre 2001 over 3 litres.

Every high end dealership in London must be crapping themselves
Cost of ownership of anything over 3ltrs, is going to cost you an extra £6000p/a, if you live or have to commute into the congestion charge everyday.

It's going to have a serious effect on the motor trade. Even if yr paying £60k for a Range Rover - the so called target for this tax, you'll still going to think twice about having to pay an extra £6k p/a ownership tax - the cost of ownership means the car is practically worthless after 3 years !

I all for saving the planet (OK i drive a corvette) but i don't fly that often, switch lights off etc - if it's about cutting C02 emissions, then tax the carbon footprint.

In fact Ken - why don't you start by switching the lights off in town hall in the evening ? and make sure every office building switches the majority of lights off - that would far outweigh the C02 emissions of pushing off the so called chelsea tractors.

Vote him out and hope that Boris will revert this tax

They do turn most building lights off in China after 10pm - I think it's law over there. (The ones for decorative illumination etc.)

But I guess you can't tax that so easily..

And makes very little difference when they are pumping out gods knows how much crap from the manufacturing sites that are spreading like wild fire.

I've gone vegetarian which means I have cut demand on methane-producing beasts and that more than offsets CO2 from my cars. However I think my methane production has increased somewhat as a result, increasing use of A/C from time to time.

shootProblem with that also is that you will also be soiling your underwear and accordingly using the washing machine far more often, thereby using more water, energy and chemicals soapbox

Consider that the government takes and average of 42p in every pound generated in the country and consider that that 42p is partly responsible for paying for the 1 in 5 people employed in the public sector (5.7M). Also that probably 75% of government is waste. If you sacked 75% of the public sector you would not only make the economy more efficient, increase productivity thereby futher increasing efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.
By nature the public sector is inefficient and probably causes a disproportionate amount of emissions due to this inate waste.
Just one example public sector sick days cost £4Billion, thats a lot of trees and wasted carbon. For this reason and others you need 3 people to do the job of one in the public sector!

Redeploy them in the private sector and save the country and the environment!
Privatise the government!

I wanted to confirm that Boris Johnson was indeed opposed to this tax on Corvettes, and that he would repeal/scrap it if elected. I received this reply from his campaign office:-

Dear Mr Sansbury,

Thank you very much for taking the time to email the Back Boris campaign. Your message has been passed to me as Boris’s transport researcher.

You will be pleased to hear that Boris opposes Ken Livingstone’s proposal to charge certain vehicles £25 a day to enter the congestion charge zone. As Mayor he would scrap this charge.

Boris believes that the congestion charge should be about tackling congestion. Penalising a small number of vehicles based on the personal prejudice of Ken Livingstone will not make a difference to emissions or traffic congestion. In fact by allowing some vehicles in for free, Ken Livingstone may only make the situation worse.

Full details of all of Boris's policies will shortly be available on www.backboris.com in the form of a manifesto; I hope that this will deal with any further issues that are important to you. Please feel free to contact us further if there is anything else you would like to bring to our attention, it is extremely important that we hear from Londoners about the issues that really matter to them.

Once again thank you for your email.

Kind regards,

Asheem Singh

Well, that is encouraging. Perhaps Boris would like to zero-on on the real polluters i.e. like some of these 15 year old jap petrol bangers or old Escort diesels belching out exhaust and crankcase fumes driven by (most likely) non-insured or non-traceable drivers all sharing the same name and always can't understand or speak English.woohoo
