Spent most of Christmas installing a car computer (Xenarc SC10 and Xenarc TSV 840 8.4" touchscreen) in the Corvette C5. Still work in progress, but so far have:

Windows XP
HP Tuners (with 2 bar MAP operating system in open loop)
Log works (Innovate software for the LC-1)
Dragon Naturally 9.5
Jet Audio as the MP3 player
Rainbow 4 channel amp and 6.5" speakers in the rear (ditched the Bose)

The Dragon is voice recognition software which commands HP Tuners (and Jet Audio). The VCM Controls feature in HP Tuners allows you to change gear on the 4L60E in real time. With a macro running in Dragon this gives voice activated gear shifts.

Still early days training the voice recognition and the speed is slow (that's Dragon) and not 100% reliable (that's the cheap Logitech headset I'm currently using - no noise cancelling) but it holds the gear so you can stick in 2nd or 3rd to anticipate the road ahead, which the auto can't and you don't have to look down to use the auto stick.

At least the car does what it’s told most of the time, unlike the wife.

I like the idea of that - will it recognise 'CHANGE GEAR YOU B*ST*RD'!

What about 'Get in there' if you're listening to football on the radio.

Won't do a thing in mine. If the passenger can't hear me over the exhaust when sat next to me, what chance has a silicon chip in the dash got? I would have a very sore throat after shouting every change all the way around Sarf Lunnon.

I'll stay with me little hurst shifter ta muchly...

Valid point - my radio speakers gave up after being turned up to full continuously to try and hear anything, so how would a speech recognition system work. Don't bother now - only music applicable in a Vette is the sound of a nice big thumping V8
PS
Perhaps speech reognition could recognise a specific rpm engine tone and change gear!

You do of course realise there is a difference between DEAF and DEF !
After riding Harleys for 20 years in a piss pot and shades and shooting shotguns it has been noted by 'er indoors that in order for me to hear the TV she has to wear earplugs !
(I do understand though that this by product is entirely acceptable as it doesn't impair my enjoyment of any of these activities. In fact the aural pain has got less as the years have gone by !) she doesn't waffle at me so much as she doesn't often get a reply ! And I'm "only" 44 !!!!!!
