coilovers will transfer the car (stop the mid corner hop on bumps but you may not be getting that if its that soft). You could just try some new shocks, if they are the originals on the car.

Suspension on these should not be 'spongy' -in fact the stock set up is normally criticised for being too hard causing the car to 'hop' on uneven roads.
Could be shot dampers, or a broken anti roll bar mount. Or it could even be that being a later car, they did soften the suspension as a reaction to earlier criticisms.
