if you import a US car to the UK, you usually pay 10% car tax and 17.5% VAT (assuming the car wasn't exported from eu in last 3 years), correct?

are there different rules if one is living in the states and moves back to the uk bringing your 'personal' car with you?

cheers

Yes!

I think you either pay no or 5% duty if you have owned the car for six months or more. I believe you still have to pay VAT if you are permanently importing the car. Check with www.hmce.gov.uk for details.
If you are importing a pickup truck you pay 22% duty as opposed to 10%.

5.1 Can I get relief from duty and tax on transfer of residence?

* are moving your normal home to the EC
* have had your normal home outside the EC for a continuous period of at least 12 months
* have possessed and used them for at least 6 months outside the EC before they are imported
* did not get them under a duty/tax free scheme (but see paragraph 5.2)
* declare them to us as explained in paragraph 3.2
* will keep them for your personal use and
* do not sell, lend, hire out or otherwise dispose of them in the EC within 12 months of importation, unless you notify us first and pay duty and VAT on disposal. Our National Advice Service can tell you how to do this.

Have you've got evidence that you've used the car while over there, e.g. garage receipts or fuel bills ? They may want to see that.

If you owned the car in the US for over 6 months you import the car tax free as your personal vehicle. You get a C&E388 to register the car. You surrender the State title on registration.

Just make sure that you "have the use of" rather than just own the car for 6 months before you import to the UK, that way its all tax free. I didn't need any proof other than the invoice for the purchase and insurance to clear customs.

Let me get this right,, , ,
If I can prove I had use of the 'vette 6 months before it arrives in the uk, then I might get away with paying the 10% import duty,
Also, to prove I was actually in the states 6 months ago,
Mmmmm, got me thinking,
How would i prove i had use of the car 6 months ago,
petrol receipts?
or what, , , ,

Its just a customs interpretation of the legislation, it says you have to be outside the EU for more than a taxc year and owned the car for more than 6 months before you import it. When I brought mine in the shipping company said that I had to have had the use of it for the 6 months in addition to owning it, apparently some people had been caught out by this and had to pay the tax. I just made sure the ship left a week after 6 months were up.
