Confirmation - Gordon Brown has got it all wrong.

My C5 returned over 36mpg on a run to Cambridge from Basingstoke today at not particularly low speed (I'll leave it to your imagination officer) apart from one nasty 20minute stop on the M3.

Also, it had its MOT on Saturday. On the emissions test, it registered..... wait for it..... ZERO (nowt, nuffink, sweet FA) on CO2 emissions. I thought that the machine had broken, but the tester said that the bigger engined cars tend to be much cleaner than the little ones. This is because the engine management system has to work to very low tolerances due to the amount of stuff being burnt - whereas on a little car, the electronics do not need to be so careful with less being burnt. Sounds credible enough....

He also joked that I couldn't commit suicide in it as it was so clean - but I suggested that a run off the top of Beachy Head at about a ton should do the trick if the hosepipe doesn't work

So, I am going to write to Mr Brown for a tax rebate as my car is obviously a 5.7 litre air cleaner contributing sweet FA to global warming. Do you think he'll send a cheque?

Emissions monitoring equipment at garages works on a percentage basis not a total volume.

The fuel economy of some of the Yank stuff is an anomoly in the general equation that more displacement = greater fuel consumption, but I don't think this will get any change for taxation etc. at any point.

The C5 Corvette in all forms and also the C6 in all forms are all exempt from "Gas Guzzler" tax in the USA because of their low emissions.

Mine's never seen anything within 10 mpg of that figure

CAGS 1st to 4th shift though.
I wonder if any unscrupulous owners disconnect it?

I dunno of any that are still connected hehe

I got 32.3 MPG out of my Blue Z06 driving it from Dallas to Baltimore as it spent the whole journey at 70 mph on cruise.

I think you'll find it was producing (close to) zero CO i.e. carbon MONoxide, the rather lethal pollutant.

The gas Gordon and co have suddenly decided is a bigger threat to the world than N Korea/Iran etc is carbon DIoxide, the very same naturally occurring compound that we all breathe out every few seconds of our lives...

Doesn't it only produce CO2 because the catalytic converter changes the exhaust carbon monoxide [and unburnt hydrocarbons] into CO2?

I believe that is one of the jobs of a catalytic converter, yes.

Theoretically, burning a hydrocarbon with 100% efficiency should produce only C02 and H20 if I remember my A level chemistry correctly.

I just can't believe that a substance we have formerly regarded as harmless has suddenly been labelled a threat to mankind. There are far worse greenhouse gasses, methane for one, and I don't see a "cow fart" tax being proposed anywhere!

Have you ever seen a cow with a wallet? Seen plenty of wallets made FROM cow but never a cow with a wallet.

yup, you are right about CO2 vs CO reading my MOT ticket again.

Fast Idle Test 2738rpm, CO = 0.00%, HC = 1ppm
Natural Idle Test 740rpm, CO = 0.00%

<handsonhipsgrumpily> Well If you will go everywhere at 150mph </handsonhipsgrumpily>

If I remember right from Silverstone GT last year, yours is an very nice C5 auto? I guess an auto will be a slightly less economical proposition. My figures might be the benefit of the long 6th gear on the manual, and despite making progress, not really burying it every time on accelleration - just flipping in and out of CC most of the time to avoid the usual German cars dawdling in the outside lane. I have noticed (on a track of course officer) that an indicated 100mph is only 2000 revs on the manual which will probably also help economy.

I regularly get about 28mpg average on mixed long/short run, admittedly mostly motorway but a fair amount of town and A/B road driving too. Then again I tend not to flog it too hard through the gears and get into a high gear pretty early on a long journey due to my exhaust being very noisy - nice for a short while, but after a long run I need sign language.

On the rare occasion I get to a track and bury it, small single figure consumption is the norm - and on tyres.... and brakes... and ears

Had mine originally set at 80 in Texas and got pulled by a State Pooper.......so reset it to 70 to avoid further hassle.
