A mate of mine has a 1966 427ci Chevrolet Corvette, 390hp model with 4 speed manual trans (probably M21).

We are going to swap it out for a 5 speed, but before we order the parts, we need to know how many teeth are on the flywheel. Since I don't want to have to take the car apart to find that out as it means the car will be off the road much longer, does anyone know a way of checking whether it has the 153 tooth flywheel or 168 tooth?
Can this be checked by measuring the bellhousing diameter, or are there any other identifying marks cast into the gearbox?

Try posting this question on the club website www.corvetteclub.org.uk under the technical C2 section as I am sure someone there will know the answer.

P.S. Why if you have an original 1966 with the correct gearbox would you want to swap it for a non-original part even if it will make the car more driveable?

You said it yourself, my mate wants to be able to use his car more, hence 5 speeds are necessary. It's pulling 3,500 rpm at 70mph which deafens his missus, and it drinks like a cricketer.
With the 5 speed, 70mph will be around 2,200rpm, far better.
The swap can be done without removing the engine, so it's easy and cheap to swap back. There's no way we'd entertain the idea if it meant cutting the car or losing the original parts - we are not cannibals! The swap uses the original shifter hole and is a bolt in replacement from Keisler in the USA>

I'll try posting on the Corvette Club forum, cheers for the suggestion.
