Hi All,

This ones off forum topic but I'm looking for a new 4 x 4 as the daily runaround. I'm ditching the Audi TT now it's 3 years old. So much choice out there it's driving me nuts. I nearly ordered a Freelander then someone said NOOOOOOOOO !! Don't do it they are always breaking down. Geeeze, it's so much easier choosing a Corvette.... ring ring.. hello, yes... Z06 please.. black !!

Any suggestions on a 4 by 4 ... ??

Chevy Silverado turbo diesel 6.6L
500bhp and about 700ftlb with a good tune on it. Or 300odd stock.
They were sold from about 2001. LB7, LLY, LMM and LBZ are the engines to go for. The later ones are even better. Reconed to be one of the best diesel plants out there.
Ive seen them from around £12K locally.

The diesel freelanders are OK - I had one for about six months last year. If you want the ultimate 4x4, though, you NEED a Disco 3 - I owned one for 3 months from September last year (had to sell as I needed to buy the Mrs a new car... ), and there is nothing else like it. Great driving position, OK on fuel (TDV6) super quiet, and feels like you're driving a limo it's that smooth if you go for an auto.

You should be able to get a used one for about £24K now. As it's only your day to day runaround, don't worry about the spec - get the lowest diesel you can with an auto box. Honestly - pukka.

My wife has a petrol Freelander which is 18 months old now and about 10,000 on the clock all of which have been trouble free. I use it when I'm shooting and its great offroad. Looking to replace it with the new one next year.

G

Edited to add; I believe it was the early petrol ones that had head gasket problems, but that was fixed in the later ones

Why do you need a 4x4? Are you actually going off road with it?

If it is only light off roading, then I can highly recommend an Audi Allroad. We've had our 02 model for nearly 2 years now and it is superb.

Comfy, quick enough (2.7 twin turbo petrol), smart looking with a great interior and they don't look overtly "4x4" so you'll escape the wrath of the anti-SUV brigade.

Quite pricey new at £45k+ but they devalue quickly; we got ours at less than 3years old for £15k!

Subaru - if you want a cost-effective vehicle that's virtually unstoppable by mud and hugely reliable. Every farm I ever visit has an old Sube tucked away somewhere.

Porsche Cayenne - if you just want to tart about but mainly so you can put your favorute sticker in the back window "My other car's a Corvette"!
