99/2000 C5 airbag light on since battery change
Discussion
Hi folks.
Anyone have any idea what I have broken? I changed my battery, and immediately after the airbag light illuminated on the dash and has not gone out. As is usual when changing a battery, there was a little flash when connecting the terminals, so I assumed that I had blown some kind of fuse / relay. I had a look in between rain showers at the fuse box and legend inside the lid and there is nothing labelled as airbag. back to the web then....
Checked the DIC codes and cleared all codes. Switched on again and got an SDM B1001. Looking at the web, this appears to match something I found on the web (see below). the problem is I have no idea how to reset it using the mentioned "scan tool". Anyone got a clue please, or will I need to take a run up to the fine Mr Goss' place to have the right scanner applied? Cheers.
Kev.
Oh by the way, the car has a replacement radio from the previous owner... so no comms to radio on the DIC.

Computer sets DTCs when modules are replaced. Certain 1999-2000 GM vehicles having Class 2 Serial Data communication between modules can set codes when a module is replaced or reprogrammed. Class 2 Serial Data communication allows the various computers to exchange data. This information may be operational or merely for identification purposes.
Among this information is the VIN. Typically, the PCM broadcasts a portion of the VIN, while another module broadcasts another portion. This info is compared by the SDM to ensure correct matching between the computers and the vehicle type. If there is no match, however, certain maladies may occur.
As an example, DTC B1001 can set and the air bags will be disabled. Take note that the VIN also prevents radio theft. So when the broadcast VIN differs from the VIN stored, the radio sets DTC B1271 or B1780. In this case, the theft lock engages and the radio becomes inoperative. This problem may occur as the vehicle is being repaired. GM says when you replace a PCM or other body control type module, the VIN information must be reprogrammed into the new module. Therefore, always follow the specified control module replacement procedures.
After completing the repairs and reprogramming, turn off the ignition for at least 30 seconds. Then turn the key back on and recheck for DTCs. If codes are present, do not replace the SDM or radio.
Use a scan tool to clear the DTCs from all modules. The SDM and/or radio should then operate properly. To ensure the proper operation of the SDM, turn the ignition off, then on. The air bag warning indicator should flash seven times, then go out.

May help.... http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showt
Thanks for that. I had picked that one up on the web, but seems that example it is a fault on C6 Vettes with wiring harnesses and things. My C5 fault is probably a bit different as I was the muppet that caused it by changing the battery - everything was fine before, and now I get the 7 flashes and the airbag light remains on afterwards.
All fuses check out ok - so perhaps it could be an SDM programming issue with the partial VIN Number checking. Supposedly it checks the radio as well - and as mine has had the BOSE replaced by a previous owner with some other device, it may be struggling. By other stuff I dug up on the web, it looks like it may need to go on Tech2 to fix it....
I'll just have to miss the accident till I get it fixed!
Cheers!

Try thumping all around the air bag sensor - if you get a bag in the head, you'll know it was working

Another thought, have you tried turning the airbag off with the key and then back on again? (The is standard practice for all I.T. equipment).
I will give that a burst tomorrow - dumb ass IT person forgot to do the obvious..... well actually didn;lt realise that there was an off for the airbag - so dumb ass unobservant IT person now then.....
