Went to register my blue Z06 today, the pencil head at the DVLA won't let me use my '03' plate I have bought for the car because he wants proof of when they car was made. banghead

I tried arguing that it isn't the production date, but the first registration date that matters but the moron started quoting the tired old "I don't make the rules" bullsh1t.
He kept saying you need to get a leeter from the manufacturer identifying when the car was made, this is BS it must be when the car was 1st registered not built that defines the car's registration!
I phoned the MVO in Louisiana and the first guy tells me it was registered in March 2003, but the brain dead american pencil head working in research dept who I had to be put through to confirm this states I need to write in to get this information enclosing $10 and by the way they might tell me to feck off as "data protection" might stop them releasing this info banghead

The result being I have sent a letter to the MVO in Louisiana to request this information and can't register my car with my registration until I get a reply.

W@NKERS!

......thanks for listening......and breathe

seems to me that they just gave you licence to park and speed where you like for a few weeks

I drove around on a private plate that wasnt' transferred properly for 6 months - got stopped a fair bit - but just told them it was a DVLA cock up - i knew what car it had came off - a grey Morris Minor - no kidding !
( the plate was on the 930 ! )

The VIN will identify the car's age, as far as I know.

I think you should settle it using some 4 by 2 .. . .

Mine should be on a 03 but is on a 52. Not vital unless you're putting together a race replica which just happens to have the #3....

I wrote to the DVLA and now they want to see the car - reckon I will have just as hard a job as Nige in convincing them.

My car was built on the Friday 24th Feb 2003 so therefore it would be impossible for it to have been registered in Louisiana before the 1st of March therefore it is an '03' plate end of story.

I will carry on driving it on the Texas plates until I hear back from Louisiana MVO.

sorry to hear that, but cant you just go to another DVLA office and get a different pencil head who will have a different opinion of the rules. did they take note of the need for more info?

If you ask Stratstones nicely, they should be able to access GM comp to see when warranty started that would be date of first registration. I have used this method in past to get dealer to write DVLA letter that used to be sufficient, good luck.

I'm sure that helps too when passing those grey and fluorescent photo boxes beside the road too...

What good will a Trojan horse be in a situation like this?
An American solution is required here in the shape of a .44 yes

But seriously, I really think that it depends on who you get on the day and the correct paperwork scenario seems pertinent across the board. I registered my Ultima in December and was prepared for all kinds of grief but was in and out within 15 mins. Your situation is indeed a little more hassle because of possible difficulties in dealing with our friends across the pond and their protocol/legislation and wot not.

Good point Tekwiz! I hadn't considered the warranty as a source of info.

I sympathise with you chaps: we have to register several 'imports' each month and, even though our cars have European Type Approval, invariably the DVLA pick up on at least one that they don't like the look of.

Let us know the VIN and we'll see what we can do to help you out.

Stephen.

I brought in an 04 rumbleebee a couple of years ago registered on a New Mexico title which stated first reg oct 04 I put my V8 YEA on it from day one but when I sold it instead of getting an 0454 I got an 0453 ! the truck had a build date sticker in the door stating a build date of June 04! Scuse me but isn't that proof of manufacture ? not according to the DVLA ! I needed the infamous manufacturers letter.I gave up as I had sold the truck anyway so I wasn't that bothered. You would think that as they accept the VIN plate as gospel they would accept a factory sticker( that includes the VIN etc) as well.Come the glorious day bruvvers !!

Just had the same problem

My Vert was built in 02 and I bought it 19 Dec 02. First on the road 6 Apr 03 and registered in Nevada Jun 03. I got an 02 plate. At first they wanted to give me a 51 plate because that was the oldest they could possibly make it.

No amount of reasoning would change their minds

Oh well, at least the vette is distictive so the number plate is irrelevant.

I really don't understand this. I have twice imported cars from Italy and they had been stored unregistered in Italy for some years. When registering these vehicles here the date of first registration in Italy was taken as the registration age here making the vehicles appear, from the plate, several years younger. No consistency as usual.

Well, despite having been informed 3 times, my ZR1 is sadly registered with an 1800cc engine with DVLA

Still, 420hp from 1800cc puts me at 233hp per litre... if only in the DVLA's eyes

Of course, I'm fairly sure if it was registered at 1300cc and there was the cheaper tax, they'd soon change.

Government Departments - great value for tax payers money.

European cars = no problem
Outside Europe the DVLA want a letter written in blood by the guy that built the car stating when to the second the car was finished. This is complete bollox as in Europe as you quite rightly point out it is date of 1st registration not build date. I will present them with the reply from Louisiana when it arrives and go from there.

Adrian who owners a 1993 C4 40th anniversary model has his on a '51' plate as the DVLA used the date it was imported as the date it was first registered.....so his car appears 8 years younger than it actually is!

The DVLA which is controlled by gov't policy try to make it as difficult (and expensive) as possible to bring anythiing as possible.

Why for example do we have to pay 10% import duty (22% on trucks) on 2nd hand goods? Why do we also have to pay VAT on 2nd hand goods? I have never understood how the gov't justify's this?
