Hi, hope there are some C6 Z06 owners here?

Iam close to putting a deposit on a Z06 at an importer but im still not sure,a few doubts still remain, iam coming from an M5 simply because i dont need 4 doors and have never owned a conventinal sports car before.
Can anyone share experiences with the car since thay have owned it have there been any nasty suprises with quality issues and how do you find commuting with it being LHD.
Also how is the influx of parts for them into the UK will i have to wait ages for brakes and service parts ect, since i will maintain the car myself.

Many thanks

Hi,

I am only a humble C5 owner, but I can assure you that you get used to overtaking very quickly in a LHD Vette (you can interpret that either way!).

Parts are easily avaailable from a number of US suppliers and some UK ones too, especially for regularly replaced items such as brake pads and oil filters etc. If you order from one of the major US suppliers the parts will mostly arrive in under a week in my experience. Even larger items (e.g. full engines etc) can be shipped using somebody like Moving Parts (our very own Eric the Viking).

Don't think twice... go ahead and order the Vette! You won't believe the torque when you first drive a Z06 after an M5, and the smile wont go away for months

The LHD isn't a problem - ok sometime down a country lane, you do have to pull right out to check the road ahead but LHD is quiet fun - allows you to chat to other drivers in traffic jams

Firstly....Get it, get it!!!

Only a humble C5 owner again, the Z06's lucky buggers will follow i'm sure!

I found LHD a little harder to get used to than I thought I would. But its only hours possibly a day before you are fully used ot it. It can be a pest when you have someone crawling in front of you, like an artic/van. Your visibility can be shut out. You just have to drop back a bit to get a view. You have of course the power to blip past quickly.

The performance increase will be breath taking if you make the swap! The looks will be far better as well. I bet the fuel economy isn't a massive gap either.

The only possible thing I would say you would sacrifice is ride comfort. The gears will be much heavier than the M5 and it will make a lot more noise. Not only the engine/exhaust tone but you will get a lot of tyre noise. All adds to the feeling of being in a true sports car if you ask me, I wouldn't have it any other way.

If I had that budget for a new car there isn't honestly one I would rather have.

Ian

Can I ask why you are looking at purchasing at an importer. Surely it's worht having a chat with me before you take the plunge?

Levinson, I own one. Don't think twice - get one. Truly amazing in so many ways and, to answer your question about commuting, the best commuting car I've owned!

Why buy an import when you can get a UK Spec car with a 3 year warranty??
I own a C6 and looked at the many grey importers some are cheaperbut when you work it out the money you save is not that much. Any problems with the car it gets picked up and done under warranty, I have had a new roof replacemant just done on mine. Also there are lots of different changes on the UK to US spec lights and radio Thathcam alarm for the UK even in the US manual cars have first to forth skip for the gas guzzler tax in the states which is really anoying in theEuro models you don't get that also euro cars have differnt lights and have deadlocks unlike the US cars. Any recalls won't be done under warranty. I have done all the sums and you may pay more but get peace of mind when spending that sought of money!

I didn't say I actually commuted in it, just that it's the best commuting car I've owned!

Levinson, have a look at some of the American Corvette forums and you'll see lots of yanks singing the praises of the Z as a daily driver.

Nah I meant, if people buy them, Park Lane will fight to order more and your car will be,
well, you know - cheap and common! hehe

Seriously, I can't wait for mine and I have no issues with how many are on the road, I think
it will ultimately be a good thing. yes

Parts from the USA.....well if it is big and heavy then Moving Parts, but for service items like an oil filter for example you can get them here in the UK.

I buy a lot of upgrade parts from the USA and a number of suppliers will supply to the UK for example West Coast Corvette and I have to say their service is spectacularly good 3 days from California to darkest Gloucestershire.....you do pay a lot for shipping but if you need something quickly you can't beat it.

Saying nice things helps demand, not supply!

You're partly right though - doubling the numbers still makes them rare but makes more people notice them and, hopefully, want them.

As has been said, parts aren't a problem.

The Corvette is made for home-servicing, and in reality doesn't need much anyway [no cambelts, for example]. Oil, spark plugs that sort of thing being the usual and only required maintenance.

Next, it's an American car, which means not only can you get the full factory service manuals for it, you can also get full part numbers online or on CD-ROMs, and of course loads and loads of resources on the internet.

There are a number of places right here - OCW springs to mind - who have on-the-shelf [and next day service] of most parts, i.e. filters, spark plugs and the like.

Clutches, discs and the like can usually also be gotten next day from Blighty, but maybe more expensive than waiting for a week and getting them Fed Ex'd.

You'll find that you should be able to obtain any part you need within a week, delivery costs being only the constraint on how soon you need it...

My own Corvette, a 16 year old ZR1 - so quite old, and also only 1 of 6500 or so with 32 valves [and hence a completely different engine to the other 1.2million Corvettes!] - has never caused me any problems finding parts either. So a brand new Z06 shouldn't be any problem at all...

Go get it, and enjoy the sound of a Corvette V8

Wow,great feedback,thanks.

I'll be honest and say it will be towards April when i hand over the dosh but we assumed that an importer was the only way to get one, thanks for clearing that one up at least it will have a proper warranty and dealer back up.

I was going to get the new M3 in persuit of a smaler lighter car but they will be too common within a year and the styling is bland from the pics i've seen.
But this Z06 is such a package with tha engine and looks and materials, the interior looks quite cheap but hopefully the event of driving it should overshadow this.
The only mods will be headers and an exhaust if needed, possibly a remap,I did see the one in evo with similar mods and it sounded like they had good results.

Does anyone know if there is a dealer near Leeds or in the Yorkshire area?

Cheers

Get one if I had spare cash I would px mine seems much more refined than a C5 with a bit more presents on the road than a C5, and there is no issue with parts on C5 or C6 very easy to get
Apparently C6 ZO6 is getting a common site on the roads, not a bad ad BMW but no longer quite so exclusive as a limited edition C5

Sam :-)
