BRIEF CHANGES I CAN SEE NOW FOR 2008 CORVETTE
Remember these cars will be here for next year around Feb-March 2008.
Coupe & Convertible will have 9 interior choices!
The 7 we have now and 2 new ones
245 Sienna Custom Leather Wrap(?)
425 Linen Custom Leather Wrap(?)
Z06 also picks up these combos to their interior choices

NEW COLORS, do not have all the full names yet, but the New Blue we also broke 1st is going to be called BLUESTREAM, no Mulsanne as we first thought, it is code 85U which MAY BE a tint coat color, the other color and yes it replaces one.
I noticed that QX3 chrome wheels may NOT be available for Coupe & Convertible, but Q76, the Z06 Chrome wheel is still showing available.

The Coupe & Convertible show;
QG6 as SPLIT SPOKE standard wheel &
QX1 –SPLIT SPOKE Comp grey &
QG7 as FORGED POLISHED. No sign of the QX3 chrome wheel option(?!)

Coupe & Convertible now get a 4LT PKG, so there will be a 1,2,3 & 4LT for COUPES and 2,3,& 4LT for Convertibles; The Z06 also picks up a new package of 3LZ, we know NO content at this time.

LOOKS AS IF THERE IS TO BE A DIFFERENT AXLE available on the automatic GU2 as a 2.73 performance axle for the 6 speed auto!

And the big news…and yes it’s a follow up to our original story, THE LS3 ENGINE IS A GO for 2008 (6.2L) Corvette Coupe & Convertible. Should be a HP bump, we just don't know to what....

The existing 3LZ pacakge available on the 2007 Z06 relates to the DVD Navigation System. I beleive.

Monterrey Red is supposed to be replaced by something similar called Crystal Claret - according to the US sites.

ls3 with a hp bump....hmmm..guess the old zr-1 won't be as fast as the base vette any longer! Well not to shabby for the old girl to hold her own for 18 years!

I DOUBT THAT the endurance record of 5000 miles at 173mph will ever be attained by the new vettes though!!!

So I guess the KOTH is still the king there!!!

Correct. In fact, I added the following to Wikipedia's entry about the Corvette ZR-1:

"Although the ZR1 was extremely quick (0-60mph in 4.6 seconds, and onto 180+ mph), the huge performance of the LT5 engine was matched by its robustness. As evidence of this, a stock ZR1 set a number of international and world records at a test track in Fort Stockton, Texas on March 1, 1990, verified by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile), including:

7 New International Records: 100 Miles @ 175.600 MPH; 500 Miles @ 175.503 MPH; 1000 Miles @ 174.428 MPH; 5000 KM @ 175.710 MPH; 5000 Miles @ 173.791 MPH; 12 Hours Endurance @ 175.523 MPH; 24 Hours Endurance @ 175.885 MPH for 4,221.256 Miles

3 WORLD RECORDS - IRRESPECTIVE of CATEGORY or CLASS: 5000 KM @ 175.710 MPH; 5000 Miles @ 173.791 MPH; 4,221.256 Miles @ 175.885 MPH

These records remain unbeaten today by any subsequent Corvette, including both the C5 and C6 Z06s."

Have corvette attempted to beat these records? Or has anybody else for that matter? I because although it's a fine achievement I haven't heard of any record breaking attempts for a long time by anybody. Maybe we only here of the successful events.

I think the Ferrari 550 Maranello has beaten those records. They produced a few "World Speed Record" limited edition cars to celebrate the holding of the records. Not sure if they've been superceded now.

Obviously not many manufacturers choose to attempt such massively time and money consuming records and I presume fuel consumption plays at least a big a role as top speed if fuel stops are taken into account in the times!

godzilla,

I'm not aware that any Ferrari has beaten that record. When looking into it, I see that on the zr1 website, a VW W12 machine has beaten it:

www.zr1netregistry.com/ZR1_records.htm

Note, AFAIK these records include time for changing drivers and re-fuelling, hence the averages being around the 170 mark and not the 185mph or so the ZR1 should be able to attain. Further, I think they were absolutely stock ZR1s minus the cats [for overheating issues running 24h] and a roll-bar fitted.

I don't think these records are that easy to acheive - they would not be costly to organize - but it does take a lot for a motor to be ran at max hp non-stop, barring a few breaks, for 24h.

As part of the LT5's engine testing / proving was a very nice 200h - so 8 days!! - of 5 minutes at max torque, then 5 mins at max hp, on and off, continuous. Over-engineered probably, but absolutely bullet-proof being the result.

Yeah, it looks as if the 550 was only run for the shorter distances.
Damon Hill wrote the following in The Times a few years ago:

"...the beautiful 550 still had the ingredients under the skin to make it a highly desirable proposition. So they decided to give it a shot in the arm by sending a slightly souped-up one to an oval test track in Columbus, Ohio, and getting some poor motoring journalists to go round and round in it as fast as they could, for as long as they could, before they either crashed or broke the car.

By some amazing stroke of luck they didn’t crash, and in fact scored three new world records for incredibly expensive touring cars.

These were: covering 100 miles at an average speed of 190.2mph, driving for one hour at an average speed of 184mph and covering 100 kilometres at 188.9mph. Bizarrely, this seems to prove that mph are faster than kph (another world record for Britain). It also demonstrates that if there were a banked lane exclusively for Ferraris on the M25 you could do a lap in less than 40 minutes. Write to your MP. "

The W12 VW was never even close to being a production car, so I don't think it is worthy of mention compared to the 550 and the ZR1.

It would be interesting to see what a Veyron could manage over 24 hours seeing as it can apparently empty its large fuel tank in 20 minutes at full chat!
