A friend of mine swears that the ZO6 has a balsa wood floor. If this is true what happens when it gets wet or if you drop the end of off your cigarette.
"There are two layers of composite material with balsa wood in between. Dave Hill [Corvette chief engineer] says that they examined synthetic materials. But he pointed out that the fiber structure of the balsa wood, with thousands of oriented fibers per square inch, is not possible to achieve with synthetic materials. He admitted that it costs more than a synthetic, but drivers can feel the difference in the stiffness and damping that it provides."
Balsa wood is a surprisingly good material, we did a materials selection exercise at uni for the best material to make lorry leaf springs from - and surprise surprise - balsa wood. I think the practicality (and probably cost of consistent manufacture) means we don't see lorries with wooden springs.
Let's face it, you can use scissors to cut metal (copper wire/aluminium foil) and if you had some carbon fibre mat in front of you the same would be possible, balsas great properties are its strength to weight ratio, but its low density probably means you'd need a larger volume of the material.
