I am looking at driving a Corvette across part of America to the coast and as it won't
be a rental, I will need American based insurance.

Does anyone have any experience of this or a recommendation as to who to contact?

Why dont you speak to the guys at Hagerty www.hagertyinsurance.co.uk/
They are an American company who have set up here. They should be able to do something.

I tried to get insurance when I imported my Z06. No dice as they insure the driver and they have to be US based. In the end, my agent drove the car on my sister's insurance as she lives in the US.

OK maybe I am being thick but if my insurance company will insure me to drive my car in France, why won't they insure me to drive my car in America. And there is a company that organises Route 66 cruises where you ship your car over there. So they must know how to get insurance. No idea of the name but might be worth a bit of internet searching

I live in Vegas

You need a US street address to take out US insurance so visitors would have a hard time. The insurer also needs to be registered in your State of residence. Its quite a trial setting up insurance on arrival and it costs an arm and a leg.

If its a privately owned vehicle, anyone can drive on the owners insurance with his or her permission. Unless you're good friends though, it's a leap of faith for the owner.

All that said, there is a company that we Brits use on arrival who are used to us being different from the norm. They're called Sunrise and they arrange insurance for us prior to issue of US driving licences. It may be worth a try:
