Some may remember my dad bought a C5 a month or so ago.

Nothing wrong with the car but he's having trouble with an insurance company - lets just say if you wanted to connect two dots on a piece of paper in the shortest manner possible this is the method you'd use.

Anyway, when he took out the policy they asked if he had a Thatcham 2 Immobiliser and he stated he had the standard Corvette Alarm/Immobliser. The guy on the phone said this wouldn't be a problem. When he gets the documents through they state until he proves it's Cat 2 approved he wouldn't be covered for theft. Obviously he's not too pleased with this and calls them. Long story short they ask for proof from an independant inspector / dealer he bought the car from / Corvette.

He got an approved auto electrician who inspected the car, verified it was a two lane system etc. and wrote a certificate which he sent off to the insurance co. They reply not good enough we need the make and model. Mhy dad then asked Chris graham to call them and he had no luck either - they keep asking for a make and model. My dad is now at a loss as to what to do as they can't seem to comprehend it doesn't have a make and model it is the standard Corvette Alarm / Immobliser. This is obviously the case as he has the standard key fob and inspector verified an after market system hadn't been fitted.

Anyone know how to get round this - I've looked on Thatchams website and they list the 2000 onwards C5 as Cat 2 but how can he prove to the insurance this is what he has short of ripping the electronics out and sending it to them!

I've suggested he goes with A-Plan but when he rang for a quote they said they'd get back to him and never did. My dad is worried he'd have the same problem with them - have any of you guys had this problem?

Second easier question - anyone know where to get some locking wheel nuts from. McGard would be preferable but I'm not sure of the part number or the best place to get them from.

Anyway thanks for reading and happy motoring!

It was supplied used by Chris Graham so I think it is an import but I'll have to check when my dad gets home. The key fob, from memory, is black, 4 buttons, 2 are grey with lock and unlock sysmbols on them, a red one with a horn on and one more grey one with a car on. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have a Cat 1 alarm but it may have a Cat 2 Immobiliser which is what the insurance want proof of.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Mark

Yer thats the GM remote In 2000 in the UK all Chevrolet cars had standard new Thatcham cat 1 alarms fitted at the docks in Bristol they replaced the standard GM remote the system was called a chevrolet alarm but was a Toad alarm very good system no trouble you would also get a red led fitted next to the trction control button by you arm rest, In Europe they still were supplied with the GM system that has a car pass 2 immobliser on it becuase Thathcam is only for UK insurance companies requirement. The alarm you have is build in with the horn on your as teh toad had a seperate siren nothing wrong with the one you have its a factory system but Insurance firms are very funny! Good Luck

Just tell them to stick their stupid policy where the sun dont shine, and go to MCE. They are friendly and helpful, offer a good quote, and I didnt have any of the bo11ox you seem to have been subjected to. You have a choice, and some insurance outfits seem to forget that !! A-plan have just saved me nearly 300 quid on my monaro, so call them too. Cheers, V8D

To be honest I told my dad to steer clear of mainstream insurers before he got the car but he didn't listen! They simply don't have any experience of dealing with an unusual car. How do A-Plan and MCE deal with the question of security - do they require Cat 2 or do they appreciate the fact that the standard system is far superior as is?

A-Plan really need to provide a quote as requested if they want his business though!

Thanks for the advice.

I have a Mustang modified to 462hp and A-Plan still don't need anything other than the stock alarm as long as it's garaged. I believe MCE are similar although I've heard some bad reports about MCE generally in terms of paperwork (the reason I just got shot of my last incompetent insurers). I'm surprise A-Plan didn't get back to you, they're normally very good but then a lot of people have been defecting to them.

You might try Norwich Union too. Surprisingly very competitive for the Vette when I had the Z06.

For the Monaro, A plan asked is it standard security system - Yes, Stock - Fine.
They gave me a DISCOUNT! when I said I have a tracker fitted! Parked on drive - no probs.
For the C5 Vette, MCE simply said was it the stock system - Yes, Fine. end of the matter.
I thinks its just that some companies like unusual/modified etc cars and some dont !
Good luck, hope you get it sorted, and can get on with enjoying the car - V8D

Thanks guys - I'm seeing my dad this afternoon so I'll tell him to chase up A-Plan and MCE for a quote. They obviously have a better handle on stuff like this.

Anyone got any thoughts on where to get a set of locking wheel nuts from and what part number?

Cheers
Mark

I wonder how necessary they are sinc ethe whhels will generally only fit a Corvette. Nobody's ever tried to nick my wheels and the hardest job I had was reoving and throwing away the lockers to start with. Given they're all easily removable with a socket and hammer, their worth is questionable.

Disclaimer: If they get nicked, don't blame me.

You could also try Hagerty Classic Car insurance www.hagertyinsurance.co.uk/ They are one of the biggest USA insurers and have just opened here at the beginning of this year. Based at Silverstone, the guys I spoke to were true petrolheads and new what they were talking about.

I had no problems with them at all for my much modded C3, they were also very happy to insure the Corvette Racer that Corvette Kingdom unveiled at the Nationals.

Tell him to kick DL into touch. I've heard a lot of bad reports from them as well.

It's all subjective but, the cheapest I found my C5 was with Barclays. ... No kidding

It's just to be on the safer side - the average chav will probably nick them in the hope they'll fit on his Corsa.

The wheelnuts are to stop wheel thieves. The steering lock is to stop owners.
