The paddle-shifted 6 speed auto is here at last, available on coupe and convertible. Should be a big step forward over the old 4 speed.

I'm sure it'll be a no cost option. Or maybe not.

I like the idea, lets hope it doesn't suffer from the same low-speed problems that Ferraris do.

Slowly finding out more about the new 6-speed auto. I read today that (at last!) it has sensors to stop it shifting gear mid-corner. One of my gripes about the old A4 has always been its tendency to shift in the middle of a bend, which can only be avoided by manual shifting although this isn't too painful with 2nd and 3rd covering just about everything. If anyone's got an A6 it would be good to know what you think of it, particularly speed of response to the paddles and shift firmness.

What's with all the questions Steve? Not angling to buy a nice new C6 are we?

....hence my interest in how owners are getting on with it. No plans to change my car yet.

Having finally driven one of these paddle-shift auto's I can say it's a big step forward over the old 4-speed unit. Quiet, refined and idiot proof! The speed of manual down-changes is very impressive and there's no significant interruption of power delivery as the tranny shifts. It feels as though the auto would be significantly quicker on the road than a manual because the gear changes are so much faster. This transmission completely banishes the C5 "excessively aggressive kick-down" issue and makes the C6 a great car to live with. Quieter motorway cruising too. Even if only used in the two fully automatic programs of Drive or Sport the shifting is top quality and the wave of torque from that wonderful LS2 means the car is never in the wrong gear. Better still, when you use the manual mode the computery never intervenes and makes a gear shift you haven't asked for. The car is hugely quick; any mode, anywhere, any time.

A massive leap forward for the Corvette.

I hope to get my C6 with 6sp auto in the next week.
Will let you all know my impressions and comparisons with a previous auto C5 and manual C5 Z06.

So this is an auto with manual override as per the Aston DB9 as opposed to an automated manual, as per the Vanquish?

Certainly, it appears the former are a great compromise and are generally reliable and well received. They also take less "learning" than the automated manuals.

Should suit the c6 very nicely, I reckon.

You got it. A fine 6-speed torque converter auto with manual intervention via the paddles. Two paddles, one each side of the steering wheel. Press with thumb to change up, pull with fingers to change down. Absolutely perfect with the LS2.
