Another small nugget from AOL motoring

Le Mans winner to go on sale

The Corvette Z06 will become the fastest and most powerful Corvette ever built when it goes on sale in December.

The hand-built Z06 is a production version of the C6.R racing car, which won its class at this year’s Le Mans 24-hour race. Performance figures bear witness to its racing pedigree, with a top speed of 198mph and a sprint time from 0-62mph of just 3.9sec.

That’s all thanks to the Z06’s 7.0-litre V8 engine, which develops a staggering 511bhp – making it the most powerful unit that General Motors has ever put into a production car.

Drivers of the standard Corvette C6 might be hard-pushed to notice the power increase offered by the new car. The Z06 offers 111bhp more than the 4.0-litre V8 in the C6, but the lower-powered car still manages a top speed of 186mph and a 0-60mph time of 4.2sec.

Buyers are more likely to notice the difference in price, with the Z06 expected to cost around £60,000, as opposed to £45,850 for the C6. UK customers will also have to settle for left-hand-drive cars.

Cadillac & Corvette Europe claims to have already received more than 150 orders from European buyers.

£60K sounds quite high for a Corvette, but given <12sec 1/4 mile, <4 sec 0-60 and nigh on 200mph it's quite cheap compared to anything else in that sort of league. I'd have one

Didn't think the waffle about the "hard pushed to notice the difference [between base C6 and C6 Z06]" was right - I'm sure you'd notice the difference!

Cheap compared to the 1990 $64k tag of the ZR1 - which a lot of people payed $100K for just to be first.

Guys on ZR1 net are saying dealers are already marking up Z06's by $10 over list, some are selling to highest bidder.

When I was in LA a couple of weeks I was talking to Corvette Mike about a new Z. He was saying that some guys are paying $100,000 to get hold of a new car. I think I'll wait until the new year.......

There's always some sucker who'll pay over the top for something that seems exclusive - but isn't - and the dealers have found the source!
