cheers mate, if i cant find out by this afternoon then i will just put the last 6 digits of the VIN as well, did you get any probs when registering your car at the office?
Nope, no problems at all, but then again when I registered my 1996 LT4 Coupe it was 1999 and the rules were probably simpler then!
The local DVLA office lost some of my paperwork which made things a bit interesting but after a bit of huffing and puffing they got things sorted.
The i.d. number is in the same place for both the LT1 and LT4 engine options in the 1996. Looking at the front of the engine, it is located on a protrusion of the block which is situayed to the front of the l/h cylinder bank (passenger side)However, you can not see it unless you remove an electrical component (possibly a coil) from the cylinder head as it is located below this. As Vetteheadracer states, unless the engine has been changed, the engine number should be the same as the last digits of the VIN number hence the importance placed on older Vettes of a 'matching numbers' car.
Best of luck with the checks.

well i knew it wouldnt go smoothly, they kicked up a real fuss over two points
1. i only have a fax copy of the HM customs form
2. i dont have a proper USA reg doc
the lady at the desk told me althought she has taken the forms, it may be rejected!
So its gonna be a tough few days before i get the news, and i have spent a small fortune buying the car and getting it through the SVA already.
Do i have any come backs if the DVLA refuse to register my car?

Simple answer, get the original form from HMCE and try to get the original title for your car from the US. Each state has it's own licensing office and therefore if you have a title from Virginia for example you will need to apply for a copy of the title from the Virginia Licensing Authority (all of them have web sites) it will probably cost you about $15 for a copy of the title.
DVLA will let you register it as long as you jump thru all the bureaucratic hoops that they put up.
