Still having problems with pace car and steering column lock. Out of interest how many C5 owners on here have had the recall dealt with and if so was it to replace column lock, add GM wire kit, reprogram computer, all of them, some of them or nothing at all. It looks like we will have to resort to sending ECU out to the States as it doesn't look like anyone over here has knowledge of LS1 edit, unless anyone knows different!

Sorry, I've adopted the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." attitude on this. I know it'll break sooner or later though !

Hi Tristram, we adopted that on the basis of over 120k miles etc, but it got us in May and has just got us again with 12 days before we go to Hockenheim, ouch!

I was eager to buy whatever bits I could when I got my C5, so I fitted the column lock simulator from Thunder Racing. A bit fiddly, but really a 15 minute job... Fit & forget (I hope).

I had the factory recall done at BM - not sure what they did but (touch wood) had no probs before or since.

It looks like most of you have not had a problem. The factory recall relates to 1997 to 2001, later years should not have a problem, if you haven't encountered this problem yet it is almost certain to get you if you have 97 to 01 vette. If you have had the factory recall done it can still get you as it did us 3 weeks ago, a lot of the GM wire kits are faulty, good luck.

Mine's an '02 so it may well be OK - have read this on other web sites too.

A lot of people think the later cars won't have a problem...until they do. I fitted a column lock bypass from Corvettes Of Houston the second mine arrived. From reading the forums, they never ever fixed the problem, despite the recalls. There are three camps of thought:

1. The believers in GM
2. The non-believers in GM
3. Those who used to believe in GM until it happened to them.

The impression I got a coupel of years back when reading a variety of USA reports was that this "problem" is extremely rare. Thus Testicles first comment makes sense for UK based cars it seems to me.

There are many on Corvette Forum who would disagree but I think you're right to a certain extent in that it obviously only happens to a small percentage of cars. However, when it happens to you on Ilkley Moor in the rain and you can't do anything, you may change your view.

I'm still no closer to understanding that song than 25 years ago, and 3 of those years were spent in Yorkshire !

Fair comment Wayne, not a lot of fun if it does happen. I guess you have little option but to get the kind Mr AA/RAC man to take you to BM. Personal note, once the summer is over I must get down to fitting the CLB!!!

I know it's been hot down on the south coast today, but I think you chaps need just a bit more shade.

(getting back on topic and talking about stingrays) too true Pete. I spent most of the day out on the boat fishing, but with the sun canopy up I hasten to add, and did not catch a thing, too hot for the blighters I guess.

With HM the Queen and Tony Blair linking arms to sing Auld Lang Syne no doubt. They don't make 'em like that any more!

Does anyone here rememeber all the "Time and Tune" songs you had to sing in school like "Calling All Martians", "A Beetle Sat Upon A Green Leaf", "Dashing White Sergeant" etc etc. They should bring it back into primary schools.

Mind you, these days, mentioning Martians would be racist and the mention of a Sergeant would bring uproar of military training and war in primary schools.

On the main subject, one guy on Corvette Forum had a 2004 Corvette and derided anyone with a CLB bypass and used the precise argument used here. He was absoltely vehement in his defence of not playing with the car. Then it happened to him. I think the problem is that once it happens, you're stuffed and there's nothing you can do about it. So you take your chance or not.

Calling all martians to take a stand
Earthmen invaders approach our land
Up and attack to make them draw back
We are all friends and our speceship's manned.

Right, I'm off to Spain.
