I'm toying with the idea of getting a Corvette, and a C5 fits the bill in terms of styling and budget
Do they have any failings? I'm guessing the drivetrain will be fairly bulletproof
Also, insurance. A quick look at quotes came up with £200(minimum) more than my 350z; seemed a bit much...

Only real problem can be e.c.u they sit in the wheel arch and are susceptible to corrosion over a period of time that can create havoc with the electrics. The e.c.u is reasonable but the labour isn't as their is no longer a loom for it. So the existing wiring needs to be chopped and rejoined. Other than that they are trouble free cars.
If you want to read about C5's, this is probably a good place to start:

I'm surprised about your insurance. I would get some more quotes, and don't bother with comparison sites. Insurance can be had for £200-300 I would think, obviously dependent on your risk. I would try Admiral, Adrian Flux and Stevenage Insurance Services to start with.

I read the C5 thread on CCCUK last night funnily enough. Of course it is more of a 'what can go wrong' list, than what does go wrong (I hope!)http://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c5-tech/124921...

Interesting you mention Stevenage Insurance; they are a 10 minute stroll away from my house
I had a C5 Z06. No real issues. The manual shifter is a bit of a pig though so autos well worth considering.
Sometimes hard to judge the sides and width as they curve outwards.
Check the driver's seat as they can rock due to some failure or other (I forget what).
My only gripe was that it was so much more grown up than my "hooligan" C4, even with half the power, the C4 always put a bigger smile on my face because it was more fun (but C4s are old now).
Companies like Classicline are good on limited mileage but Norwich Union direct (now Aviva)insured my 405hp Z06 for £400 a year (back in 2004 though premiums have remained fairly constant).
