Hi all,
I have 1964 327 SBC engine, just reconditioned, runs nice but blows a lot of oil in the air filter via the rear sump oulet tube. I am not much experience with American V-8(being European) hence my question.
I initially thought the engine was overfilled as someone has been working at the dipstick and could have blown the surplus oil away ,but I took the oil outof the sump and got only about 2.5 liter .
The engine blows so much oil in the air filter that it drips out of the front tubes, paper filter is soaked.
When I let the engine run without filter cover there is very little blowby from the sump, even when blipping the throttle heavily. No signs of sump pressure,no oil traces on the front filler cap.
I would only expect a very worn engine or one with a holed or damaged piston to do this.
Could it be that overfilling with oil caused the initial soaking and that once the air filter clogged with oil the engine sucked further oil out of the sump?
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dirk/Antwerp

Dirk - things I would check include dipstick - is it actually the correct one for the engine? has it been replaced with an aftermarket one?
Had a similar issue with my newly built 'stroker' 489 cu in big block. Engine was built to 'race' standards so tolerances were 'loose' and it had a degree of crankcase pressure. The aftermarket dip stick and dip stick holder was a poor fit in the crankcase and not sealed properly. At high revs a heavy oil mist was pumped out of the base of the tube, running along crankcase and on to passenger side header burning off and leaving a blue oil haze behind the car. Took me months to realise what it was. I eventually changed open rocker cover vents to a closed pcv system, sealed the dipstick tube properly and cured the issue. If you run the engine at high revs does it have crankcase pressure?

Dipstick was the original one,but was a bit mangled.
The only place where oil came out was via the rear vent tube;nothing at the front filler one.The amount was massive in the air filter, must have been up to two quarts that was pushed out.
No sign of sump pressure when I give full throttle blips.I'll have to drive her hard without air filter to make shure.

This was on the Corvette club website, it seems to matter which way the pipes run.

I'm presuming that the 327 did not have pcv - just road draught tube and vented oil filler cap?

Yes indeed,no PCV valve.I was just wondering if there is some sort of baffle plate missing?
