Can anyone comment on the merits of each?

Why not a Z06? A GT500 gives a Z06 a run for its money but a GT500 would monster a Grand Sport...actually, which year GT500 are you talking about as there are big changes in HP between models.

I can tell you live in a country with no corners.... GT500 is a very different animal. I always think they suit people who want drama as they look a face-full, make a lot of noise and are in their element doing burn-outs. They never feel as fast to me as their figures suggest they should though. One is a Sports car and the other is a Pony car with an oversize motor.... You'll need to drive one to find out it it's for you. Grand Sport is a good car and realistically it's the Corvette most people needed as it had the looks of Z06 in a lower maintenance, easier driving package. There aren't many people I know who can extract all the potential from a Z06 as it's just to scary on the limit for them and Grand Sport was built for that purpose.

Ha, ha, I am one of the above but he's right: I've made my GT500 handle but it will never handle like a stock vette. It's too heavy and "old school".

I totally agree with my other mate whose reason for buying a GT500 was "I looked under the bonnet and it was like looking at an old musclecar. And driving it is similar to one: it's like an old car with modern reliability and (slightly) better fuel economy.

Whereas a Corvette is world-class: built to compete with Porsches and Ferraris.

A Mustang is for kids that never grew up. like me!

Very well put indeed biggrin the only other thing to way up is do you ever want to take more than one passenger ? Granted adults in the back if the stang is tight to say the least but if taking kids out is a possibility then that will swing it, to me the look of the Z06 is just awesome, nice wheels and a little lowered and bam best looking thing on the road

Good point Vaughan. Last year 4 of us climbed into Malcs Mustang (I was in the back) for a trip to
the NEC. A bit tight on headroom but plenty of room apart from that.

I see arguments for both cars, but I go with the gt500. 4 seats a decent boot plenty of power and besides what others tell you decent tyres and it handles ok. You can always make it handle better and put more power in so many aftermarket parts out there. I disagree wth it not feeling fast, it pulls very well the super charger gives you plenty of lateral power instantly, no lag.

I may be biased but that's my opinion

As a Mustang owner and ex-C5Z06 owner, I would personally forget the very heavy older iron-block GT500 which people buy for the drama and looks, not the handling. later ones got an aluminium block so should handle better.

Accepted wisdom is to buy a much lighter GT and supercharge it to around 500hp, lower it and upgrade it or you buy a later 425hp 5.0 GT or try and track down a 444hp Boss Mustang. These will provide the handling side of the equation. However, many still hanker for the looks of the GT500 - that's just the way it goes and who can blame them.

The superiority of the Corvette is not absolute. CAR tested a C6 in their 2005 Performance Car of the Year and the Mustang came 3rd, C6 10th. They did hugely improve the Corvette C6 thereafter though (I know one mag gave it 5 stars around 2009-ish?) and I've never actually driven any C6 so can't say but believe the shifter was improved.

The biggest letdown, for me, on the C5 Z06, was the gearshift which was stiff and obstructive, even with an aftermarket short shifter. I still loved the car but that was a major demerit that impeded the flow of the drive.

On an irrelevant issue, depending on your personaility, I rarely got a second look in the Corvette (people tend to be more stand-offish) and the Mustang, at least in the UK, attracts far more attention, which can be annoying.

I think you'd need to drive both to decide which is right for you. I would probably have kept the C5 Z06 but needed 4 seats and the supercharged Mustang has a similar power to weight ratio as the C5 Z06 and a better shift.

Mustangs feel heavy for some reason, I've had several of both and the Mustang feels "agricultural" in comparison, they don't feel as rigid or built as well and the suspension is more akin to a "70,s Capri. They look great though and certainly get up and go in a straight line.
I guess I just prefer Corvettes !!
