Yeah the take away is that DI changes the optimal characteristics of head and chamber airflows.
Some US guys are adding 18% of airflow to the OEM heads, but it will be interesting to see how that affects combustion, BMEP and knock etc.
Perhaps just adding the cam would give best results.
Also interesting stats on fuel gains from AFM. ~20%

At the time I was working in motor manufacturing the understanding of squish, swirl, tumble etc was in its infancy. I read that paper (or at least, as much of it as I could follow) with interest.
Being a cautious fellow, the conclusion for my own Corvette requirements was pretty clear,
"Don't mess with your engine - GM put a lot of time and effort into getting it right"!
