Just buy some drag radials for racing.Whether they be at the far end like Hoosier or Mickey T, or the slightly more road orientated end like Nitto 555R's, they will make a huge difference.
At the likes of Santa Pod etc there is no comparison whatsoever to normal road tyres, or even 888's
Whether 17, 18, 19" or whatever they will still work superbly.
But as mentioned, with more traction can come more breakages.

I am looking to get some Nitto NT555R 275/50/15s, but can't find anyone in the UK to supply them. Anyone know of a UK supplier?
I just ordered some Mickey Thompsons for the strip. Don't go with the 555Rs. NT05Rs are MUCH better. You run 18s right? The NT05s are also a much better tyre to run on the street compared to Hoosir/Mickey Thommpson.Edited by stevebroad on Thursday 7th February 21:49

Lee at LARacing can get them http://laracingparts.com/Edited by stevebroad on Thursday 7th February 21:49
Hauser Racing, and I'm sure the likes of Andy Robinson racecars etc
They will be ordering them from the US though, Cant see anyone in the UK keeping stock.
So whether it works out cheaper to buy directly from the US yourself or not, is debatable.
Summit racing etc can supply/ship

I havent used NT05R's. What reports have you read that indicate the 05R is better than the 555R ? Is that better on the strip, or just the road ?And also bare in mind the legality of such a tyre for road use. The 555R does retain a pretty full tread pattern. Looking at the NT05R, certainly no cop local to me would ever allow such a tyre. It would not have the correct amount of tread pattern or depth over enough of of the tread width to be road legal in the UK.
Is that a risk you're prepared to take ? 3 points per tyre isnt a nice proposition.
None of the US tyres are E-marked, although that's a bit of a grey area. Tread is not that grey though
As far as NT05R being any less road legal than the 555s, they're the same. Now with that being said, the 555 will behave much better as a street tire than the purpose built drag radial NT05R. You will have much better straight line dry traction with an NT05R. There's plenty of reviews out there.

555R has a full and visible tread pattern across the entire width. NT05R does not. So it will fall foul of the 1.6mm over 75% of the width, because it simply does not have any water channels over the full width. And I was under the impression the 555R is the drag radial. The NT05R is a bit of a hybrid aimed towards track and drag.
555R is primarily drag.
I used the 555R's a few years ago and they are very good tyres, certainly much better than 888's or anything typical in the UK. But I never tried them hard around corners. Although with a low profile set, I'm sure they would perform well there too even for a drag orientated tyre.
