Iverytime I start to browse the classifieds excitedly I reach teh same conclusions that I havent got the feintest idea at what IM looking at, despite liking them a lot.
Thanks

Theyre are books available with all the model year changes etc. American cars always tend to have slight physical changes year on year. You can age the car by these changes - it stops dealers in the US from selling last years car as this years car etc. like you get here where you think you are buying a new car but in reality it's been sitting in the storage facility at Sheppy for the last 8 months.... You will see cars over here sold as the wrong year as well but a quick check of its options will show its correct year.

These changes can be things like different wheels etc. Models tend to evolve through their years as well which generally improves things but often can loose a bit of the original models rawness. The Z06 for example was all about being light but as the years ticked by its gained a few more things and options like auto trunk open/closer that have added some of the pounds back on and moved it slightly away from its original design sheet.

May be worth going onto corvetteforum.com and searching and browsing threads on there.

There's way too much to list for each C5 and C6 model year. Most would probably go for the one they like the look of most and then decide between rag top, coupe, Z06 etc then look at the model year options you want, don't want and of course the price range to narrow the search

It's the Corvette nationals in September (between Luton and Hitchin). There will be a load of cars there and a wealth of information. Mitch from BM is also usually there as well

In short, you have the base, all round model in vert or coupe, the quicker more performance focused Z06 model and then in the C6 the even quicker ZR1 model above the Z06.

There will be US cars and official UK cars. The US cars have cheaper road tax, the UK cars can be sold in to Europe so may be easier to sell on. Official Euro C5s have 2 big fog lights in the rear and official UK C6's have lamp washers making them easy to spot.

Few extra tid bits.

97 and 98 ECU's on corvettes are not good, very inflexible and not suitable for major mods.
99+ model is good in that respect.

Same goes for 05 model. Its a one off, 24x crank and E40 ECU. 06+ get 58x cranks with E38 ECU
05 model also has weaker diff and old 4l65e trans as opposed to 06 model 6l80e

Discount the 05 model accordingly, its probably fine as stock, but if you want to mod its probably best avoided.

08+ model has tr6060 trans which is much smooter shifting and stronger earlier models have t56 trans (manuals)

If you are an auto person 06+ C6 is the go and for manual an 08+ model. Though a replacement tr6060 trans from the US is only $2k if you want/need such a thing.

Thats probably just me being anal, but thats my take on the range smile
I alway mod, so starting with the best base is always good save much pain and anguish later.

biglaugh CHeers RR.
I love how you entusiastically say things like
"Same goes for 05 model. Its a one off, 24x crank and E40 ECU. 06+ get 58x cranks with E38 ECU
05 model also has weaker diff and old 4l65e trans as opposed to 06 model 6l80e" as though you have temporarily forgotten that you are the most obsessed Corvette man in the world and other people won't know what that means!
(A bit of tongue in cheek ribbing, there by the way, not to be confused with miserable ungratitude)

You will also notice a friendly bunch of enthusiastic owners. C5's still look amazing after all the years they have been available and offer a lot for the money. Early C6 manuals are often bulky in changing gears and much better with 2008 build onwards as Ringram pointed out.

Just make sure that when you are looking you ask when the car was actually built not registered. There can be 2-3 years difference in the two dates!

Pop down to the next Surrey Corvette meeting at the Fairmile, last Tuesday in the month, located in Cobham along the Portsmouth road. There you will see lots of C5 & C6's all with owners telling you why you should by their particular variety!

Martin i have heard this talk about baulky gear changes on early C6,s but i have never found that with mine. Mind you mine has low miles. Those 2008,s+ must be something else.

Mine was a very early one (actually built in Dec 2004) and had only 10,000 miles on it. The 2008 model year was a massive improvement and actually made it a pleasure to change gear.
