rear wheel bearing replacement
Discussion
It is quite a in depth job to be honest, the main issue or mistake when being done is getting the correct shimming to allocate the corect free end play, is there a lot of play in the existing as it is quite common for the spindles to have been damaged beyond repair through worn out bearings, it is not an imposible job for the good home mechanic but can be a pain in the ar-- job, its normal to while having ot all out replace the infamous parking brake mechanism with stainless steel replacments while it is all in bits, there will be others that will reply with a really good full explanation but basically drop the half shaft from the spindle, remove the spindle lock nut, caliper removed, if the hubs never been off you have to drill out the laarge rivets to enable the disc to be removed, then (this is the worst part) ideally using the correct puller remove the spindle from from the bearings, this is where it can be very difficult as they can be very hard to remove, one option which is what i did when my stub axle snapped was to remove the spindle housing from the trailing arm and i took it to DART in kent who pressed it out fro me and fitted new bearings and set up the correct shimming, then bolt all back together. Like i say others will give you a better explanation but its not a simple job like on more modern cars, hope this gave you some idea of the job at hand (been a few years since i pulled mine apart)
