Hi folks, I've got an LS3 crate motor in an Ultima (wet sump) that needs an oil change.... I believe the std part is an AC Delco PF48, which seems to be tricky to get hold of in the UK. However, I believe the K&N HP-1017 is an alternative (http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=HP-1017) and available from Opie Oils (http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-64696-kn-performance-gold-hp-1017-oil-filter.aspx).

Does anyone have any feedback on using the K&Ns instead of the Delco parts? Any concerns / issues?

Thanks, Mark

K&N are good but always stick with AC Delco-

Try Bauer Millett Manchester/Whitequay Corvette Reading/or Ian Goss services they will hsave the delco filters on the shelf.

The K&Ns are excellent filters... certainly not inferior in anyway to the O.E. Delco item.

The K&N also has the added benefit of a hex on the end; ingenious idea and really helps removal.

FWIW, I use a K&N on my 500bhp Gen-I 383.

The main issue I had with the K&N filter on my C5 Z06 was the hex nut on the bottom of it. When fitted that hex nut was the lowest point on the car and the knowledge of that sent the heart crossways on me every time I went over a speed hump or bad road surfaces, I changed back to the Delco one for that only reason.

This was what put me off using this on a C5Z also. I've used the aftermarket Mobil-One filter with no issues tho. Not sure if these are easy to source in the UK.

I agree, stay clear of the K&N's

I was under my car (C5Z LS6) a couple of days ago and was shocked to discover some damage to the filter with a tiny amount of oil that had leaked out. I received a shorter AC Delco filter today which I'll be fitting tomorrow. After looking on the U.S Vette forums, it seems that this is a known issue with the K&N filters.

The OP is talking about fitting a filter to an LS3 in an Ultima, not an LS6 in a C5 Z06 though.

Any brand-name oil filter will be fine in a crate motor. I chose K&N for my 383 because I was running a high-volume pump at the time and wanted a filter with a decent burst strength for those cold weather starts where my pressure could easily rise into the 100psi+ range. The captive hex was an added bonus.

Thank for the continued feedback folks. In the Ultima, the AC Delco filter sits flush with the bottom of the sump, which itself very low in the chassis and almost the lowest point of the car. I wouldn't want the filter hanging any lower. AC Delco it is then!

Again, thanks.

Just had a quick look at your facebook Ultima build site, looks impressive. Do you have a regular website, I don't have facebook.

I found the hidden build photos, very well documented. I wished I had the skill, patience, and money to build a car like that, it's awesome. Ultima is my dream car for some time, unfortunately they are beyond insanely priced in the Netherlands.

Yes, I can read.

My warning was to be aware of the K&N's in general as they're the longest filter out there. Funnily enough, after a quick check on the forum, it appears that K&N filter's on the LS3's do also project further than the sump.

If an extra 8mm (the difference in height between a PF48 and an HP-1017) is causing you ground clearance issues, then I'd suggest you need to look at your ride height. The K&N filters are not 'the longest filters out there'... the length of the filter is totally dependant on the application and plenty of other manufacturers make longer filters of the same thread size and canister diameter, etc. It's all just a case of what's fit for (your particular) purpose.

I aim for a minimum of 3.5" under the sump (or oil filter, is that's the lowest point).
