Hello all.

Just went down to the MOT centre with the '68 and the helpful chaps pointed out a degreee (around half an inch)of movement in and out of the passenger side half shaft into the diff.

Any ideas? The car seems to carry on working with no clonks or bangs and I dont appear to have had a problem whilst driving - is this something anyone else has had a problem with? The half shafts only have 5000 miles on them so I suspect its diff related.

Most probably the common problem of wear in the side yokes (the piece attached to the half-shaft).

If the yoke is coming out that much it's possible its worn past the spring retainer! If it has worn there is also a danger that the yoke will travel in too far and the dust cover will grind into the diff case, not good!

A side yolk is simple to replace but it's a diff out I'm afraid...smash

Thanks the-esses.

I had a feeling in my waters that it was diff out! Thanks for the response. Any way of getting hardened side yokes? I suspect you are right and the c-clip has come off - the lateral movement is spectacularly large to the extent you would think that you would feel the suspension geometry move about while driving.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

A friend has recently changed his yokes on his C3. You can usually tell how bad the wear is by the camber of the wheel. Would be worth posting on CCCUK as many more C3 owners on there

Thanks guys. The camber seems fine. I understand that the yokes are held in place with a c clip, which I am guessing may have come off.

Yes they are held in by C-clip not a 'spring retainer' as I mentioned in the previous post but I knew what I meant... rolleyes

Here's a pic of a good side yolk and a bad/worn one...the one on the right has worn away passed the groove for the C-Clip!

And here's what it should look like inside...The center pin in the Diff is hard hence the wear on the soft side yolks. Ones you buy now are hardened but can be of varying quality!

Hopefully the side yolk won't have mushroomed, as then it may be a pig to remove! You'll also need to replace the oil seal(s).
And if the yolk is definitely your only problem then you could put it straight back or you can go further by checking the tolerances and set up!

Incidentally I have a spare diff and I'm sure that's for a '68 although I don't think it has side yolks!

The Esses. That is possibly the most helpful and informative piece of information backed up by pictures that I have ever seen on Pistonheads, let alone received! Thankyou.

Will do. I let my membership laspse when I came out to Dubai, but ought to get back involved.

One very final bit of advice. Where do I buy this stuff? There seem to be 2 types of yoke (I have the big half shafts - dont know if this means the HD yokes) and while I am in there I want a rebuild kit and a 3.08 pinion gear. Any ideas? Its a bit bewildering.

ETA - membership renewed and thanks for the reminder!
