Having previously owned a 1999MY C5 (and a 1977 C3), I would like another Corvette and as has been said before, advice is to go for the C6. Now, my finances won't stretch to a late model C6 so would be looking at say an early standard 2005 car; high mileage http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/chevrole... at NZD$65,000 or low mileage http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/chevrole... at NZD$85,000. (divide by 2 for pounds value)

The other option is to forget about a C6 for now, and get something more affordable for me, like this http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/chevrole... a low mileage 2002 Z06 at NZD$44,000. (Or a 2001 C5 convertible in yellow.)

I don't need to be driving 'on the track' mode, just having a good, quick, reliable iconic car. What is the experienced advice of these vehicles at 3 years difference? Buy the cheaper C5 or save my pennies for a C6 in a few years time?

Based on the usage you've described, I think you'd be happy with either. I've run an '08 C6 convertible for the last 3 years, and ran an '01 C5 convertible from new for a couple of years. Yes, the C6 is faster and has a few more toys (heated seats especially welcome!) but they're both great cars and deliver the "Corvette experience" in buckets. If you're planning on harder driving, then you will notice the better performance and brakes on the C6...but a C5 Z06 will be closer than a regular C5.

So really its how deep my pockets are - get a C6 next year perhaps.
US imports of pre-2003 will cease next year due to emission rules so do I need to change this to a C5 coupe or convertible discussion??

Pop-up headlights rule!
Personally I think the C5 looks better. track tests of the C5 Z06 and the C6 with Z51 had the Z06 as the winner but not by any huge margin. I suppose it comes down to which you like - the C5 is bigger physically and all the better for it if you have the roads.

I had a 2002 C5 Z06 and it was great, very quick. Needs an aftermarket shifter and a boot divider though, both cheap enough. I believe they softened the rear dampers in 2004 to allow the car to get the power down better and the 2004 Z06 also had a CF hood.

Any advice or knowledge available on this car? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=42...
It's an early car but seems the right price? Especially as it's already here in NZ.
VIN claimed to be: 1G1YY34U855118763
Are there any recalls or downsides with such an early C6?
The later C6 in my previous links are still for sale but 50% dearer and this older C5 http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=41... is $10k cheaper but which is the better car?

C5 is bigger and looks better IMHO.

It's worth mentioning that the very earliest C6 autos had a 4-speed box essentially carried over from C5. Later autos have a 6-speed with paddle-shift.

AFAIK the manual box has been the same throughout.

So that C6 would be the same as a C5 underneath but wearing a new dress?

No. Similar architecture but the C6 was downsized to a 911 footprint. C5 had the 345-350hp LS1 and the Z06 the 385/405hp LS6 (both 5.7) whereas the C6 had the 400hp LS2 (6.0) and later 430hp LS3 (6.2) and the Z06 the 505hp 7.0 LS7.

There is a C6 on PH for £18k which is pretty good value IMO. Much rather that than a Z06 C5.

No biggrin

Only issue with the 05's is engine is 24x and runs the E40 ECU and a one off weaker diff, plus auto is 4 speed.

But still it depends what you are going to do with it.

The cars are in many ways very similar but there would be very few, if any, components which could be interchanged between the two. C5 had been in production since 1997 by the time C6 was introduced and remarkably had undergone no significant changes during that production run. So it was time for a complete re-tooling of the factory when the improved and updated C6 came along. Unlike C5, the C6 has undergone changes during its production run, most significantly the very short-lived 4-speed auto transmission and the relatively short-lived LS2 engine. C6 is, as you should expect, better than C5 is just about every way although the styling remains a matter of personal taste. C6 is a bit shorter (mainly in the overhangs), a bit taller and a fraction narrower (in the case of base car only. Z06 and GrandSport are the same width as C5)

I don't think that is correct. Some of the common upgrades for the C5 are C6 items ie shifter, sway bars,C6 Z06 shocks, C6 Z06 brakes, seats,C6 Z06 LS7 clutch and flywheel,LS2 throttle body.

My point would perhaps have been clearer if I had said "very few components carried over unchanged from C5 to C6".
