Backlash Growing

Suffolk Police are investigating attacks on speed cameras in the county. Last week camers on the A12, A14 and A140 were damaged. The cameras have been out of action for more than a week as a result.

Chief Insp Mike Gooch said: "These cameras were put in place to encourage drivers to adhere to restricted speed limits in areas where there was considered to be a high risk of accidents. By attacking the cameras these offenders have potentially put lives at risk."

More police patrols and mobile speed cameras are to be employed on the affected roads in the interim.

Rubbish. There is no correlation between Gatsos and road deaths. The police have painted themselves into a corner; regrettably many people take what they say as gospel.

Without any local knowledge so I may be wrong, all the roads listed appear to be main trunk roads from the numbers, therefore generally safer than most? Ergo, these were revenue generators not safety cameras.

They are major roads, mostly dual carriageway. Definitely Revenue Cameras, not road safety. More power to the fire-bombers!

There's a nice item on speed cameras on the latest Sniff Petrol.

Posted to the ABD mailing list this morning about this one but noticed a couple of cameras on the A240 near Banstead this morning finished in olive drab camouflage paint. Totally invisible against the trees, so much for high visibility. As if that wasn't bad enough one is on a 4 lane dual carriageway with a 30mph limit.

The mind f**king boggles.

Sod it, I'm going home

The cameras on the A12 and A140 I can't speak for but the four Cameras in Suffolk on the A14 are at the Haughley bends, which "were" apparently a notorious accident blackspot. I never had the fortune to use the road before the Gatso's turned up but apparently the bends were an excellent strip of smooth tarmac which were a favourite with the rep brigade in their Mondeos, a few accidents later and everything now slows down to 50mph. The cameras as far as I know have reduced the numbers of accidents on this stretch of road, ironically though because everybody slows down, they all bunch up, thus causing delays for people wanting to cross carriageways or enter and leave the park area that's in the middle, which in turn makes them more impatient. So as soon as they come out of the restricted zone they floor it straight up to a ton!

It's amazing how they can find a whole host of coppers available to drive around watching the speed cameras, but when can't find *anyone* who'll patrol the streets/solve crimes/do proper police work etc...

Its very simple, one raises cash, the other doesn't.
You may die as you get mugged for a bag of fish and chips, but as long as the mugger doesn't drive above 30mph then he'll get away with it... If he does drive at 37mph then you can die in the knowledge that at least he got a £60 fine. F*****ed up country

Might Pistonheads readers be interested in a piece about special number plates and flash devices I wonder? Do they work? How much do they cost? Are they worth having? Where can you get them? Just that I happen to have a bit of info on this, though it's a bit out of date and would need some new research.

If so, let Petrolted know and let's see what happens from there.

Article in Auto Express about a guy in Rome stealing a speed camera. His excuse was taking it away for repairs.

But be advised,if you do get caught killing the old lady you may also get the option of a: A new pair of trainers or b: some new CDs.
Nick the speed camera and its jail for you, you fugitive from 'justice'

nice one Jason !
Seems like real crime, eg murder & burglary gets you freebies.

Speed, OR sell recovered golf balls... and you can get a year inside. Lovely.
