Watching You Watching Them

Police in Holland are having to resort to setting up surveillance cameras to watch over their speed cameras. With almost a fifth of Dutch speed cameras having been the subject of vandalism, CCTV cameras are having to be placed high up above them to look out for vandals. How long before a similar backlash requires the same measures in the UK?

Surely this wouldnt become that much of an issue over here as generally speaking we only dislike the ones that are obvious revenue generators i.e in deserted stretches of a-road where it wouldnt really be cost effective to put a CCTV camera.

On the other hand these CCTV mounts are much less substantial than the GATSO mounts so should be even easier to push over.

I'm not sure I'm convinced by this - I'm inclined now to take the "Hate one Gatso, hate 'em all" line.. burn all of them down..

I think that unfortunatly due to the blatant revenue collection service that are speed cameras (twinned with the reduction in speed limits on any road that was more than a 40mph limit) means that most people (I include myself here) are inclined to agree with you

It has allways puzzled me, that if the intention is to save lives , A just cause. Then why isn't there a speed camera in front of every school yard. As for the dutch, yet again we are shown the path to true joy (motoring freedom).

I made this point to the Essex CC Tax Collection Service (they call themselves Safety Camera Team or something) and strangely they did not answer it.

I personally think it is because they KNOW that mums on the school run are the fastest most dangerous drivers on our urban roads, and once they are all banned from driving then they will complain. Same reason as to why there is not a Mobile speed trap around school time.

No problem, just have more CCTV cameras covering the first set and to be on the safe side a further set covering them and...

Now if you can just hang on while I call my stockbroker to invest heavily in CCTV camera companies and pop down to the Army & Navy Stores for a balaclava I'll be right back.

This is one of the cameras that have fallen victim to these appalling and mindless acts of vandalism in Holland:

So whats the best form of Gatso torture? Always comsidered the big 4x4 and chain idea. Fast and furious. Rip it up and bgger off dead sharp. Only a thought, I wouldn't condone anyone committing any form of criminal damage of course

No worries, CCTV is generally of too poor quality to be able to be used as reliable evidence anyway. Unlike Gatso cameras, which if the police are to be believed can count the hairs in your nose.

Just another example of the completely nonsensical priorities in this country; cameras to catch speeding motorists justify considerable expense, cameras to catch muggers rapists and murderers do not.

But cameras to catch Rapists, murderers etc are not self-financing!
