I'm going to ask this Q. and wait for the dozens of reply's before informing you all of why, and when I do I shall SHOUT it from the ing roof tops!

Is it Illegal to drive a vehicle (Car,Van,Truck etc) With a blown headlight (not main beam, dip beam) and fog lights on to compensate?!?!?!

I saw a car driving along with only the Sidelight working on the offside and front fogs on. Is this illegal???

A car must have at a minimum sides lights on at night, whether this is one or two I'm not sure, I'd assume two. If an headlight is out then in theory you could get a ticket requiring you to get it fixed with 14 days, although most of the police force will just give you a friendly reminder. As for fogs, you are only allowed to use your fog lights in adverse weather conditions where visibility is seriously reduced. Which means using them as replacements to headlights is dangerous to other drivers as they have a wide beam pattern.

I thought this went out ages ago - if you are in an area with streetlights, and the streetlights are on, you should have dipped headlights.
And I'm sure it's an offense not to have two working headlights - fog lights are just that.

You guessed it, Plod, but it wasn't one car, well, one with the blown light, every plod car (Ford Focus Estates) I saw on Tuesday night has his Fogs on (3 Different Cars!), the same was true last night(and the blown light still wasn't fixed)!

BUT....

I was passed by an ambulance last night at traffic light and he had his damn fogs on too!

Have I missed some Tony-Law was has allowed people to drive around with fogs on?????

Now that numpties see plod and ambulance crews with them on, they'll think it's acceptable/legal and more people will do it!!!

It is illegal to use foglights (front or rear) unless visibility is seriously reduced. That is taken to be less than 100 yards. They cannot be used in leiu of other lights, with side lights on, as many people seem to think, and they are NOT "driving lights" contrary to what the MaxPower brigade think.
I have a announcement. I am currently XPLOD, however, come May, I will be Plodding again. (NOT traffic). I won't give too much away, but if people have their fog lamps on in the north of Hampshire, and get stopped by me, I have just the ticket for them. It costs £30. (No points though!).
Rant Over.

I don't think our Pandas, i.e. Fiestas have got them fitted! As for the Area Cars/Traffic cars, I'm sure they'd know better! If they do digress, I'll have to find some subtle ways to wind them up.
Regards!

Do you not think a word in their ear might be more effective than a £30 fine. I know I'd be peed off if I got a fine for that and consequently lose more respect for/faith in the police service. OK if you see the same people doing it over and over sure fine them but 30 notes for what could be a genuine mistake is too harsh. Especially when you see little scrotes robbin cars, mugging old ladies or vandalising stuff and gettin a slap across the wrist and told not to do it again.

Its the twats with the fog lights on that should get the fine, cos they're most likely to be the ones that cause accidents for the simple reason that they DO NO KNOW HOW TO DRIVE!

Don't get me wrong. I use a great deal of discretion. With speeding for example, unless someone was driving like a complete winkle and/or failed the attitude test, they got advice regarding their speed, rather than a ticket. Unless their speed was totally outrageous, e.g. 60mph past a school/town centre etc... when they would be reported and get a summons to the Mags. I stopped a bloke on the M27 doing 135 in a Chimeara. It was 3 am. I was on nights. Empty motorway. Bloke drove off (white as a sheet!) but with no more than a bit of advice.
We all have our pet hates. Mine is front fog lamps. I don't ticket Mrs. Middle Aged who genuinlely didn't even know her car had them fitted. But don't tell me your Vectra driving sales rep. doesn't know he's got them on. Or worse still, the really sad ones who actually fit aftermarket lamps (with the powerful bulbs - and they usually have those stupid windscreen washer lamp things as well) and then switch them on because they think they look good. They know they shouldn't have them on. If you "tell them off" they drive round the corner, and switch them on again. I know. I've seen it. They need a written reminder.
There, I have now packed my soapbox away.

Apologies, I did get you wrong. I also agree some people won't take any notice of a verbal warning (quoteing a mate with a Pug 106 "I always have my driving lights on 'cos they look really coooool!" ) But I suppose you can usually tell who will listen when you pull them over.

Anyways, time to go get and pull an ugly bird!

I've always considered Hampshire a civilised place to live and its good to see common sense and judgement can still be used, even in this day and age and your statement above proves it.
However, I'm very saddened by the announcement that Hampshire have now decided to join in with the state revenue generation scheme (speed cameras). My only hope is that the county puts them exactly where they are needed from a safety point of view, but somehow I doubt it.
This is in addition to the proportion of council tax payable to Hants Constabulary this year, which was increased by over 20%
I take it this, along with the use of speed cameras, is another way to make up the ever increasing shortfalls from Central Gov. to the Constabularies?
Bottom line, the good guys out there, XPLOD amongst them, are getting a v bad press and shafted from all directions. Me thinks the threshold for the 'attitude test' may well be coming down, which will be a great shame for all concerned.

Harry

PS the bloke driving off 'white as a sheet' was probably more to do with the light front end at that speed!!!
