Today's Daily Mail has a facsimile of the edition published on 4th August 1900, commemorating the birth of the late Queen Mother. Headline news focuses on the "fastest automobile in the world."

"The fastest automobile in the world. It is owned by Mr W.K. Vanderbilt jr., and can travel at the rate of 60 miles an hour. The millionaire motorist has already been fined for furious driving."

Let's raise our glasses to the late Mr Vanderbilt!

Absolutely hats off to him. Is it not sad that our expectations 100 years on are so low?

They would have had green scum flogged in those days...
