Revolving Signs
Discussion
Latest trick amongst the Great Unwashed of Epsom is that they've discovered it's pretty easy to turn round the speed limit signs on the A24. Where it goes from 30 to 40, either on the main road or where minor roads join at a T-junction the two signs are strapped either side of a single pole so they just spin them round.
So, what's the position here? "But officer, surely some mistake. I've just passed a sign clearly stating that the limit was 40"

I thought it was against regulations to have different
speed limits for each direction? I spoke to Traffic about this ages ago....
I know of a bit of the A5 near Brownhills where it's 40 one way and 50 the other, albeit on a dual carriageway - it's also the most gatsoed stretch of road I've ever seen with five or six in the space of two miles.

Thats down near rob gob and the wonderful and they are in open country so that makes them vulnerable to unautherised interference
it is great moving cones around and seeing them there some time later - does make you wonder who actually is supposed to be 'in charge' of an area!
re: mis-signing...guess you'd be okay, though it wouldnt surprise me if some smart alec cop decided to make a point...cos the signs are (accordingto the highway code) only there to re-inforce already visible signs (like distance street lights are apart)...

..hasn't the street lighting thing been totally negated with all the different speed limits we have now?
Nah they still use it as the 'lowest common denomonator' if they cant get you on anything else they'll say there is no repeaters and you were doing over 40mph for example and street lighting makes it 30 unless otherwise directed.

Do motorways have repeater signs every 200 yards/metres - or do you revert to 30mph as it has lighting?
Motorways are denoted by being dual carriageways that have blue backed signage. Although I agree the law is a bit ambiguous in this respect. They have equally placed street lights and no repeaters, perhaps the definition of motorway (blue signs etc) is enough to override the lowest common denominator?

plotloss,
The whining noise is still there but its quitened down quite a bit. I took the car for a bloody good top down blast on Surrey roads at 8am on Saturday morning and that seems to have sorted it. I think I'll put it down to cobwebs, as the Garage said it was ok, and a mate of mine who's into engines said he thought it was pretty normal.
Jake
P.S. Carzee, boom boom. Top Bernard Manning style gag. Good work.
