Unbelievable. I even have the p!ss taken out of me by all our friends for usually driving TOO slowly...

This really is taking the p!ss now by Thames Valley Police. They seem to be blitzing Oxfordshire at the moment and receiving a NIP for doing 35 in a 30 is pathetic.

Should I challenge it on some basis?

If you were doing 35 in a 30, what's the problem? You knew the limit, took the risk, got caught.....

Take it like a man! yes

Yes, challenge it on the basis that it's an absolute farce! The letter of the law is being enforced without regard to common sense, all for the sake of financial greed.

You're lucky though, they scam us for 34 in a 30 around here in Somerset. So, if you dare travel at a brisk walking pace over the limit you may well have to throw some money into the pot of your local millionaires club aka speed awareness club.

The attitude of those who say "take it like a man" etc just shows why this is likely to continue for a long time, and get worse before it gets better.

Doing 40 in a 30 is speeding. Doing 90 in a 70 is speeding.

But 35 in a 30? On a straight, dry piece of road at 14:00hrs mid-week? Come on chaps, do you really think that's reasonable? It's the sort of rigid enforcement of the rules that breeds contempt for the law and, as long as we all just shrug our shoulders, the authorities will continue to get away with it - especially now that all fines go direct to the authority concerned...

It's up to you.

Challenge it will cost you more time and money (after all, can't have people challenging the cash generating system) BUT it will also cost them more time and money. IF 50% of people who got tickets challenged them, they'd have to give up.

If the ticket is for 35 then what was the speedo showing? If it's bang on at 35 then unlucky, most aren't. If it was indicating nearer 40 then tough titty.

If you have not attended a Speed Awareness Course within the past 3 years, then you will almost certainly be given the option to do so. FWIW, its a 4 hour course, costs about £80 and carries zero points.

30 is a stupidly low limit in most instances anyway and to feel your collar for walking pace over it is, well, revenue gathering only.

41 in a 35 limit zone will see you prosecuted.
41 is only 6 above 35 and hardly reasonable do you not think?

When this relates to the drink drive limits as it does above, then people mostly have a different view.

Someone who blows 39 will not be prosecuted. They are conceivably no more dangerous on the road than someone who blows 41 and will be prosecuted.

Limits are limits unfortunately.

With drink drive limits, the prosecuting authorities accept that there is a margin for error and that gives a leeway of 4.

This is the same with speed limits. There is a small margin for error in that drivers are not routinely prosecuted for 3 or 4 mph over a 30mph limit (unless you happen to be in Somerset wink)

Limits are limits. They have to be enforced at some point and for those who fall foul of the regulations, they will in most cases not be lenient enough!

That's what comes of automatic speed enforcement.

As I said on another thread a couple of days ago, some drivers supported speed cameras "because it would get the maniacs off the road" then found that they were the very "maniacs" that were going to be targeted doing 35 in a 30.

The only point in your post that I take issue with is that, since April last year, the local parasites no longer keep the cash - it goes to HMG and they get a grant back.

always find that if the big signs that are bigger than the OP's head have one speed on them and then he chooses to go faster than said speed, then get caught by a speed camera (automatic) what is the problem with it...

try going below the speed limit ?

had a fun drive today, sat nav put me thru greenwich, then up the A10 near the a120 junction, plod closed the northbound road as bits of a bidy had been found dumped, went across country instead to the A1M

I think that it's just a fact of life of driving that you WILL be done for speeding.

Even the holier than thou lot who reckon they never break a speed limit.

Yes, you have to have limits, and every now and again you'll get tickled by a fine.

Best way to stop people speeding to make 3 things compulsory......

No windscreens in all cars,
No seatbelts in all cars,
A big metal spike sticking out the middle of the steering wheel.

No-one claims not to ever exceed posted limits but It is choosing when and where and by how much. It's about personal choice and exercising that correctly. I still maintain it's easier than ever not to be caught speeding if you are sensible and keep your observations up.

Ah but the feckers are out to get you if they can so even Hilda in her morris minor will get a speeding ticket eventually. Even if she does crawl along at 25 mph most of the time, just to be safe! She deserves a ticket for holding the rest of us up for so long! It's just another tax and only the do gooders seem to think it'll never happen to them.

I'd love to know what percentage of the motoring public have received a speeding ticket, anybody know?

at a guess.
0.5% by trafpol/police
1.5% by fixed camera's
65% by hidden scam vans
the remaining 33% beware, they will lower their limits to get you aswell

I did a speeding awareness course in December for the TV area. 2 on the course had been done in TV area for 33 in a 30!

generally I do drive at 30 mph or less in a 30 mph, not worth the possible points to get negligible speed increase, as for motorways, generally will go more than the speed limit, but not near bridges with vehicles on them that can see....

not the same sort of danger to pedestrians in 30 mph areas smile
