I was on a single carraigeway (normal road) today. This piece of road is a fairly steep hill with a 30 MPH limit. There is a Gatso (fixed) camera facing down hill and the white stripes on the road are only on the 'going down' side.

I went past (probably at about 40) going up hill thinking it could only flash people coming the other way. But the damn thing flashed me (and there was no-one going the other way or in front or behind me so it must've been me that triggered it).

Two things :

1. can I be caught by a Gatso from the front (when it's set up to catch people going down the hill from behind) ?

2. isn't it dangerous to have these things flashing in peoples faces ?

1. You're in the clear as there is no way they can get a speed reading.

2. Yes, very in my opinion and many others, but this a democracy so of course the government arent going to listen to the people!

Dex,
I've had this happen three times to me and nothing ever came of it, so I don't think you've anything to worry about.

I checked this out a year or two ago. There is nothing in law that says a Gatso has to be rear-facing, however currently all Gatsos are configured to be rear-facing. You can still set one off that is facing you, but you will not appear on the picture. Guess what I try to do every time I spot one facing my way...

we discussed and assumed its faulty, infrareds may work forward facing (look like gatling guns) but a bright flash in the drivers eyes? thats asking for trouble in a court room....

Hi

Sounds like you're OK - but they're are a few forwarding facing Gatso's (so called infra red Gatso's because they don't use radar - actually they're triggered by strips in the road) The A14 and A1 have these cameras - Undetectable by radar detectors, they have a big red lense on the camera box.

Incidently I saw my first yellow coloured Gatso camera the other day on the M25 junc 25 roadworks !

The one on the Embankment near the Houses of Parliament now has a yellow sticker on the back, but funnily enough, the 5 from Junc 3 in on the M4 are still drab grey and concealed by bushes!

What a shocker.

There are lots of new yellow gatso boxes on the M11 roadworks at the M25 junction. Sneaky thing is they are exactly the same colour as the roadworks information signs.

Some people are never happy, eh?

I know the camera you are on about and you won't hear anything, I've also been flashed at under the speed limit. Sometimes the radar gets rogue signals bouncing off other cars, mirrors etc. which activate the camera.

These cameras are TRUVELO cameras. and as pointed out earlier, are activated by speed sensitive strips in the road. You CAN be done with these devices. The red lens is a supposed to prevent the flash blinding the driver.

Clive I think you'll find the Truvelo cameras are totally different, the reason for the "red lense" is the flash is actually infra red as is the film in the camera, you don't actually see a "flash" just a glow similar to the infra red flood lights that are often found attached to CCTV cameras in security applications. I think what is being talked about in this case is a standard Gatso that is triggered by on coming traffic, not unusual and they do actually take a picture it's just current UK law hasn't got forward facing GATSO's approved and as such prosecution cannot follow, the only reason it is activated is because the actual radar node isn't focused well enough onto the correct side of the road either that or a side node is giving a speed reading of the on coming vehicle and triggering the camera, not a big deal and motorcyclists have abused these camera's for years with wheelies, fingers, etc etc even on the wrong side of the road in needed .

Ed. where's the one in Dartford exactly it's just I'm only down the road so would probably know about it if it exists.

I live in Northampton, Truvelo capital of the Midlands. They do flash, producing a blue/purple light, similar colour of emergency vehicle lights. Has anyone had their Geodesy light colours changed? Mine sits on top of my speedo pod and I keep thinking I'm on main beam. Any ideas?

My Geodesy was one of the first and I haven't had the 'plus' put in yet. It can't be done via the modem so has to go back to them. I will have to wait until I have a few days off - I daren't leave home without it! I'm also wondering whether to save the 50 quid, sell it and then buy the Origin Blue i.- far more information for the user.
