Got a bit of a shock on Saturday while piling onto the M25 (clockwise) from the M40.

New loops in the road every 100 yards and about new 20 cameras on the side of the motorway (and just as many on the other side).

They look like they have JUST been installed and they certainly weren't there the last time I used that road (a few weeks back).

Do I need to panic?

Hmmm.. sounds a little interesting.

Loops and Cameras can be a givaway to a OCR Number plate reading system. If the cameras had IR illuminators and are angled relatively steeply towards the road the this could be the case.

Can u give any more info?

If this is the case then the fact they are sited every 100 yards or so would indicate some sort of timing system rather than a 'ring of plastic' type system...

If what you are describing is not a specs system then you shouldnt have much to worry about as the device wont be approved for nicking people yet (as far as im aware) It doesnt sound very much like ecs due to the number of cams.

This is just my opinion so if anyone else can add any more or give a better description then i would be interested..

The cameras appear to be simple non-illuminating observation cameras. Unfortunately I was going way too fast when I first spotted them and on the return journey it was dark and impossible to see them.

The loops extended way beyond the stretch with the cameras, but there appears to be work going on at the side of the motorway that would correspond to more cameras being fitted. The fact that work is still going on is somewhat reassuring since it sort of implies that whatever it is hasn't been activated yet.

Having only made one pass on the site that is pretty much all the info I can give you.

I think I know the ones you mean. Are they the ones looking at the hard shoulder where there are some orange pipes being laid? I saw them there about a month ago...

I don't know anything about orange pipes, and I wasn't really in a position to judge the aim. They certainly were aimed more to the left hand lanes than the right though.

Sounds like I must have JUST missed the equipment installation beginning last time I came round that section of the M25.

Looks to me like the ones I saw. At a vague guess Id say they were just security cameras as something expensive was being laid in the gound. Proberbly some optic fibre or something of that nature.

I did see some cameras on a bridge about 5 miles further round (towards M25) with IR on them. Only two tho.

Anyway it pays to keep an eye out for these things...

I noticed they've put more GATSO markings on the road around there in what looks like preparation for more overhead gantries. Didn't it get proved that the variable speed limit was a complete waste of time? Strange that they should be installing more cameras to enforce it

Come to think of it - it was the cameras on a gantry that made me look in the first place.

I just wish I could remember exactly which stretch I was on when I noticed.

If there are roadworks beginning, they may be speed enforcement cameras for a 50mph zone- one thing I strictly stick to anyway after a friend of my son's was sucked out of an area he was working on on the M6 into a lorry

Manf, what i cant understand with roadworks is that in Birmingham on the M6 the lowered the Limit to 40 not 50 and put specs cameras up all over the place. + there where armco barriers between the workman and the traffic (personally i think the 40mph was just to catch a few ppl out). But on the same journey a went through at least 2 sets of motorway roadworks that just had a line of cones with string and no limit reduction. Safety?

No roadworks when I went through there. Not on the carriageways anyway. Might be prepping for something though I guess.
